AI used to scan old blueprints and identify areas which can be retrofit to improve safety or quality-of-life in aging buildings: Fucking awesome!

AI used to create architectural drawings: What is this, why is there a bathroom in a bathroom in a bathroom, that roof is made of dead gophers.
Oh yes, don't get me started on the coolness of using AI to help read handwriting in old texts or find how the climate has changed using millions of satellite images. So much cool work being done but Fuck AI because who has the energy to explain the difference?

The realness
a skater skated to “i will always love you” and the commentators were like “this is a big moment for her because she has always wanted to skate to this, but her coach always said ‘no you’re not good enough to skate to whitney’”

still work to do, but these are good news. Of course, we need real protection for the sea, with enforcement and monitoring
#MarineEcology
...in recent years the increase in the marine areas protected is impressive, and we have near 3 times the surface protected 10 years ago

The left tried for decades to pass green energy subsidies, passed them, the subsidies worked, and now literally the entire planet's electricity grid is going to convert to solar+battery. It just doesn't feel like "tech" because it mostly produces kinda boring blue collar jobs instead of billionaires

I just had a thought, and I am curious what other people think:

If you are cis-het partnered, who handles the textiles in your home?

The acquisition, cleaning, maintence of things like sheets, towels, rugs, curtains, etc?

Always the German tourists!
PSA. If you come to Iceland as a tourist and rent a car, do not attempt to drive across the empty highlands by yourself in winter.

You’ll just get your car stuck in snow where there is no cell service and have to walk 10 km to call for help in -18, like these German tourists did yesterday.

Thread!
the "left" broadly advocated for open access community owned gigabit fiber networks while the right coddled monopoly access to the detriment of progress and affordability for four decades
is there a technology that "the left" is excited about?

Makes me think of the recent Women in Tech conference that got swamped by men.

Gross!
I hope things in our industry change for the better in the future. I will not allow anyone to feel this way again.

Yes, there is a long time racist metaphor for this style of staffing.
There is a management trend being discussed in tech circles that looks like
• little to no hiring of entry level workers
• turning managers into super ICs (individual contributors)
• smaller teams
• everyone heavily using AI tools

I’m curious to see which companies actually follow through.

I honestly think this was a wayyyy undertheorized aspect of the Obama coalition—the addition of "technology" to the Democratic party appeal allowed a multiracial, cross-class, multi-faith group to say similar words about "progress" while meaning totally different things
for a minute there a certain popular and universally positive view of "technology" really was a kind of secular religion that held the vestiges of an "American mainstream" together, but the titans on top sold off the goose that lays golden eggs and now they want to believe AI adoption is the problem

Lots of good points being made
One thing that's important to realize now is that, even in a scenario where Dems sweep to a crushing trifecta in 2028, Republicans will use their control of the courts to attempt to continue, as much as they can, to run executive agencies in exile, with DHS/ICE under Biden as the model
