We @uam-umd.bsky.social won. Faculty packed town halls, talked to their colleagues and collected hundreds of petition signatures. Now UMD is coughing up $8.75m, during a deficit, to fund faculty whose research is under attack. Not enough, but a helluva thing for a union the state calls illegal.

In peak pandemic, Top Chef demonstrated it could be a great sports substitute. Culinary Class Wars (it could only be Korea, this is a Physical: 100 rip-off) just goes straight for that and leaves aside the Real World stuff that fills up every other season of Top Chef.

Texas A&M restrictions on race, gender could affect 200 courses
With the semester set to begin next week, professors have been directed to alter courses, and some classes have been removed or reassigned from the core curriculum at the College Station campus.

Just so. It's a regular, if elite, workforce with bad bosses with bad ideas! Like many workplaces. Except they are front and center of discourse because they work at the discourse factory and their traditional competition got killed by Google and Facebook.

really aggravating that the NYT has a huge pack of the best journalists on the planet, and then nearly all of the key decisions regarding attention, framing, and overall coverage are driven by a crypto right wing nepo baby and a dozen-ish of his toadies

Par for the course but still unnerving to contrast the Trump admin's Minneapolis & Jan 6 narratives. Renee Nicole Good was "stalking" officers & was "trying to run over" an officer, whereas Ashli Babbitt was "murdered in cold blood...as she climbs through a broken window toward the Speaker's Lobby."

Open to any AAUP member, strongly encouraged to bring a crew of ~5 from your local. If you're a member of another local, like AFSCME or SEIU, there may be a similar "new year, new training" opportunity. Some people have dual memberships because of mergers old and new, or plain solidarity.

This is great folks, they're coming up with synonyms for "abolish." That's a hegemony we're making.
Better yet, disestablish all of DHS, and undo the nightmarish idiocies that we created in a panic 25 years ago. Reestablish the INS, get rid of ODNI, fix the damage from the Patriot Act, etc.
For the love of all that is decent and holy: abolish ICE

Watching videos of these shootings, I'm struck by how they mirror the kind of gunfire that's common in cop shows--with officers firing recklessly at suspects' cars.

Which I think speaks to both ICE's lack of training and the way cop-aganda media can erode our ability to see each others' humanity.
“.. In the last four months alone, immigration officers have fired on at least nine people in five states and Washington, D.C. All of the individuals targeted in those shootings were, like the woman killed on Wednesday, fired on while in their vehicles.”

If you work in higher ed, we need you in the fight. That means joining @aaup.org and organizing with friends. "Organizing" can sound like something only crazy charismatic activists do. It's not--it's a science and an art and anyone can do it. National has a new (remote) Core Skills training in Feb.

agree. in politics, delulu really is the solulu.

the Mamdani campaign explicitly focused their early events on convincing supporters they could win.

Greens talk about "being here to replace labour"

from @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social its "we regret to inform you, we are going to win"
I don't mean to be Polyanna-ish, but history is littered with examples of change being collectively forced on rulers who think themselves omnipotent, often starting from things that seem small, and examples of strongmen overreaching towards their doom. In fact that *is* the paradigm, on the whole.

To kidnap Maduro, they mocked up war room in the country club (presumably a drunk dentist on the other side of those flimsy black curtains) to recreate the Obama-OBL-war room photos. In the background are not maps or satellites but X, with a search open for "Venezuela." Not for oil, but for clout.

The challenge is to figure out real solutions to the problems and how they might be reached with the capacity you have now or could have soon, without descending into the sort of fantasy football politics that keep inventing ideal solutions without any sort of platform or constituency.

another data point suggesting members of the inner circle may just be fleecing the old man with ai-generated slop behind closed doors. they wouldn’t be able to do that in front of reporters, so they played the real video of the murder, and it confused him
Trump also says Renee Good “behaved horribly” and insists she *ran over* an ICE agent

Questioned on that claim, Trump beckons an assistant to play the video on a laptop

When the video doesn’t show an ICE agent was run over, Trump starts stammering and trails off

1. I find Trump's claims of US control over Venezuela to be the stuff of fantasy, and am shocked that they are being entertained credulously by the US media and commentariat.

I also have a hard time seeing US majors flocking to Venezuela's oil sector, due to political and market realities.
