For months, I've driven through New Haven on I-95 and seen electronic billboards admonishing and shaming Avelo for working with DHS. Local grassroots groups funded those billboards. To quote @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social "We're going to win"
Ending the Avelo contract with DHS also a big win. And a place where, as with many fights against logistical networks, local action against a national or international problem can be surprisingly effective. New Haven is its biggest airport! And they got the mayor against the airline.

The lack of an extremely impersonal and fully automated system that just hands out 24 hour bans for stuff like this (which is something League of Legends has had for like 10 years now) is a massive problem because it really does arrest a lot of bad behavior
Death threats truly are one of those “straight to jail, do not pass go” type of violations on the internet so letting people back on who do it really does make me question what the developers actually want this site to be

Which is just to say that video is indeed very different, but we're a video generation. The good news is that laws can change things fast. The bad news is there's a real serious demand for the genre in hyper-violent societies, in part to feel good about your position in it.

Yeah idk it's question of audience norms. Our lynchings were community events and the postcards mostly circulated locally (especially after usps banned them in 1900something) as badges of membership--you knew both perp and victim. Some similar action in Southern Africa in the same period.

I appreciate this and I've been thinking about it a lot today. Not "Good or Porter were innocent and did not threaten the agents who killed them" but "goons are kidnapping and killing our neighbors and must be stopped."

Like many things in America, this is normal for my students, horrific to me, alien to my parents, but perhaps recognizable to my late grandparents. There was a huge business in America of selling commemorative postcards of lynchings, themselves major public events to which you'd invite the family.
