like i don't want to say "just make 3D castlevania into 3D zelda" but if you were to translate traditional 2D castlevania to 3D it won't be fun

but introduce the sword combat of Wind Waker for instance but apply it to a whip and you get something that wouldn't feel too wrong

rainy day, closed out like ten tickets at work, and resolved two more complex issues solo at work with no assistance from my colleagues with minimal frustration

The Goo Filled Lebron goo has become hard over the years. Because of this though you can break his arms with a loud snap and then Lebron heals himself after a few hours. Then you can break his arm again.

for what it's worth, I actually DID know the solution to this - I first found out around 4 years ago, but I never submitted a fix for it because I didn't know why it still sometimes broke (as in, when placed to the left of Mario on level load only)

I only learned why *that* part broke today, though

After some discussion on this topic, we were able to figure out how to make boo blocks actually stay still as they spawn. This way, their disguise ACTUALLY works - a bit crazy that we've been designing levels with them where this isn't the case for 25 years! #smw #romhacking

this fix is also extremely easy, at 2 bytes!... but it breaks ONE (1) thing.

when you get hit while on Yoshi, Yoshi will inconsistently run either toward the damage he took, or away from it

this is a bug with *most* vanilla sprites. the way the code works checks the sprite's position relative to a mirror of Mario's, but this mirror is initialized as x00 on level load and doesn't get set until after the sprites' Init routines have run

so essentially, they're walking toward position x00

this only happens when Mario is to the left of the Boo, because its direction of "00" is to face right.

it's actually incredibly easy to fix, but when you do, if Mario is placed to the right of the Boo now, the same thing happens, but *only when the level loads*.

so, one of my favorite bugs in SMW has to be the way Boos work.
basically, when they spawn in, their initial direction isn't initialized properly so they always face right, causing them to "turn" to face Mario on-spawn
particularly noteworthy because makes Boo Blocks misalign and become obvious

i should give mario odyssey another go and see if i enjoy it this time. every single time i've ever tried to play it, i try to learn to do the "fun" movement and realize it's actually frustrating to learn, and playing the game without going for it feels like a boring version of super mario 64
