Nighttime update🌙❄️: Radar is active across the Southern Region as the freezing line (red) pushes SE. A second wave of wintry precip and rain continues overnight into Sunday morning. Preliminary 24-hr snow totals greater than 4" stretch from the TX Panhandle to eastern TN.

Extreme Cold Watches and Warnings are in effect across parts of the Southern Region as a cold front passes through and ushers Arctic air into the region tomorrow and through the weekend. Many areas may remain below freezing for 48+ hours. This map shows affected counties. (1/2)

Warmer than normal temperatures continued across the Southern Region last week. Abnormal dryness continued across much of the region, with D0-D4 drought conditions affecting 91% of the total land area.

Drought improvement and degradation were mixed in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest and South with sizable areas of improvement in TX, OK and the Pacific Northwest.
Drought (D1-D4) coverage shrank in the contiguous US to 43.6%, down 2.48 points.
