I cannot stress this enough: if you or your child or you on behalf of your child treat admissions as a validation exercise rather than what amounts to a lottery you are begging for a massive hit to your ego. No matter how exemplary or impressive an applicant is it's just numerically punishing.

Skip Holtz is stepping down from the Birmingham Stallions. He went 33-7 and won three straight USFL/UFL titles in four years.

He says he's not retiring. He's talked with CFB teams in the last few cycles.

JEB BUSH'S EMAILS Scott's dismissals dismayed ex-governor, emails reveal ‘The Associated Press TALLAHASSEE — Newly released emails show that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was disappointed Gov. Rick Scott fired the mother of an Army soldier who had just been killed in Afghanistan as well as others who worked in the governor's office. Bush's comments were included in more than 700 pages of emails released by an attorney who worked on Scott’ transition team. The new emails were recovered from Scotts campaign manager and provide some insight into those trying to influence the new administration. The emails were lost when the private company handling email for Scott's transition office shut down the accounts. Scott last week ordered an investiga- tion into why the accounts were shut down and public records were deleted in a possible violation of law. The latest batch came The ex-governor wrote to liaison Susie Wiles, asking why ‘good workers’ were let go. from the account main- tained by Susie Wiles, who was Scott’s campaign manager and then took on the job of legislative liai- son during the transition period. The emails also show that Wiles was deeply in- volved in screening poten- tial hires for the governor. That apparently led to the decision by Jeb Bush to directly email Wiles ques- tioning moves being made in the governor's office. Bush sent an email to Wiles in December about the decision to fire Mavis Knight, whom he said had worked with “four gover nors well.” Records show that Knight worked in the appointments office. I don't quite under stand this decision,” wrote Bush. “The _ transition team is letting dedicated admired people (go) with- out hiring anyone?” Wiles wrote back and said that she would head to the governor's office “and see what I can do about reversing this.” Bush followed _ her comment with another email in which he notes that other people, includ- ing Carolyn “Freda” King, were let go. King, a re- formed drug addict who first went to work for the governor’ office when Bush was there, worked in the external affairs office of the governor. King’s son, Army Pfc. Brandon King, was killed in Afghanistan in July 2010. “All three are African- American, nonpolitical and good workers,” Bush wrote to Wiles. POLITICS IS A FAMILY AFFAIR Susie and Lanny Wiles — and now their daughters, Katie and Caroline, too — find their passion in campaigns and government issues. By TIMOTHY J. It was volunteer work on Lanny’s part, but work that took him back decades to when he used those same skills for Ronald Reagan. These days, it's for John McCain. Meanwhile, wife Susie Wiles was drawing up the schedule for Jack Kemp's visit to the First Coast on McCain's behalf, with a pretty good idea of exactly what the former congressman could handle. Decades ago, the woman who is now Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton's chief of communica- tions and special initiatives worked in Kemp's D.C. office. For the Wiles family, this election season has turned out to be both a return to those roots and a launching pad for the next generation: Both of the couple’s daughters have played roles during a race that saw McCain win the state pri- mary Tuesday. The two 20-something women ‘are tracing similar paths to their parents’, Lanny was active in politics “at a very young age,” he said, and in his 30s hooked up with Ronald Reagan’s campaign through his job at the family printing business. Susie also worked on Reagan’s campaign — the couple married shortly after Reagan took office — and they handled Dan Quayle's sched- ule together when he was run- ning for vice president. Since those days, Lanny and Susie have taken on less flashy political jobs: While Susie works for the mayor, Lanny runs a lobbying business in Washington, representing JEA and the PGA Tour, among other clients. Growing up with such politi- cally active parents provided a window into the inner work- ings of government from a young age, both women said. She was the environmental conscience for both administra- tions. Every environmental policy initiative in this city during the past 15 years was at least partially shaped by Wiles. A valid criticism of environmen- talists is that we do not adequately acknowledge when people in government do good things for the environment. Wiles was a key figure in turn- ing former Mayor John Delaney’s prophetic vision to save our area’s special places into the reality of the Preservation Project. Wiles later convinced Mayor John Peyton of the value of what the Preservation Project accom- plished. He has worked to enhance these saved properties during his tenure. Wiles has been a leader in the protection of our great St. Johns River. She helped organize the first River Summit in the 1990s, working to have it declared an American Heritage River; reorga- nized the St. Johns River Alliance; and helped to shape the stormwa- ter ordinance that will minimize pollution runoffs pouring into our river. She worked on Delaney’s project to plant 1 million new trees in our community and helped organize the Tree Protection Task Force and Ordinance, which has provided millions of dollars in mitigation money to plant trees in our town. These are all big-ticket proj- ects with long-lasting effects. We are thankful Wiles has worked so diligently and successfully for the good of our community. She deserves public recognition for her service.
