From the outside looking in, it seems Republicans would rather prevent people from voting, than try to appeal to the electorate. From Crack and Pack to the SAVE Act, Republicans seem to be working harder at suppression than persuasion.

Chartism, a working-class reform movement, was strong in the north but its last big rally, held #OTD 1848 on Kennington Common, London, was a flop. In the short term Chartism failed, though by 1918 all its democratic demands had been achieved except annual general elections.

Hamstall Ridware church, Staffordshire has much to offer the curious visitor with a Norman font, c. 1500 painted panels from the rood screen (damaged in the Civil War), remains of the medieval preaching cross and a 1550 carved screen.
