Make “the source” read “a source.”
I’d heard that the source was the seven liberal arts. The three beginning studies: grammar, logic, and rhetoric were the three ways to knowledge — the trivium. The four mathematical studies: arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy were the quadrivium. The three introductory studies were trivial.

The problem you cite is of people who learned aurally, not by reading. It’s a symptom of modern media.
