The next time Mike Johnson lies that he hasn’t seen the latest Trump screwup that the rest of the nation is discussing, the TV anchor should just quietly say “that’s ok, not everyone follows politics.”

To your point, Kevin, I wonder (and am hoping to explore in my dissertation) if political interest moderates the effect of the media environment such that other factors can continue to explain Trump's unpopularity now, Biden's unpopularity despite policy, more? Food for thought from a grad student!

What is the point of a CFL that tries to look just like the NFL?

The goal posts move to the back of the end zone. The end zone goes from 20 yards deep to 15. The field goes from 110 yards to 100. The play clock goes from 20 to 35 seconds. The rouge is limited, but not gone. Big, big changes, all driven by CFL commish Stewart Johnston.

There is no world in which it is normal for the president to publicly call upon his attorney general to hurry up and prosecute his political foes. It’s like the Watergate tapes but posted on social media. Let’s get a grip on what’s happening here.

"Political violence is antithetical to small-l liberal democracy and the murder of Charlie Kirk was wrong" and "Charlie Kirk advocated for a brand of politics that was steeped in bigoted values and did not foster constructive discourse" are two thoughts you can hold simultaneously without exploding.

Mainstream pundits have instantly sanitized and ignored Charlie Kirk's core political project and its impacts. He has been remembered by the mainstream press as someone they merely disagreed with, a debate me-guy whose words and actions had zero consequences:

Charlie Kirk Was Not Practicing Politics the Right Way
The mainstream media seems entirely uninterested in explaining Charlie Kirk's work.

This is heartbreaking and not the only story with this tragic result. We need to urgently regulate LLMs to *better* prioritize user safety and wellbeing when they're prompted with topics surrounding suicide and mental health. #cdnpoli

In that sense, couldn’t you argue the US has been backsliding for a while, and now is at the rapid authoritarianism stage? Seems to me you need the erosion of institutions and norms to get to this consolidation. Either way:

Day 1 teaching American politics in fall 2025 at @georgemasonu.bsky.social. I used PollEverywhere and asked students to describe the state of US politics and govt today. Left cloud is from the Intro students; Right is from the senior seminar. It's going to be a great semester.

In a democratic society, leaders of govt. agencies don't bestow favors and prizes on the elected leader and thank them so profusely. They ultimately work for the public, not the president. By contrast, these embarrassing public displays of loyalty are a recurring feature of authoritarian politics.
