Whenever I read discourse on AI energy/water use that focuses on the "median query," I can't help but feel misled. Coding agents like Claude Code send hundreds of longer-than-median queries every session, and I run dozens of sessions a day.

I was in high school when ICE came into existence. I remember it happening. Anyone my age or older can remember a time before ICE, and it really wasn’t that different! It’s not a radical policy proposal because the department didn’t really change policy, just created a new culture of cruelty.
If you don’t want ICE on your block but think “Abolish ICE” is too extreme, you desire a terrorized “other”…just not where it inconveniences you.

If you are, say, a mayor or politician with this view, then you want freedom from terror while also wanting the option to set terror upon others.

Anyone who wants to discuss AI (positively or negatively) should be prepared to show at least, like, 20% of the nuance that Affleck talks about here.
Insights from Ben Affleck on AI:

• AI can help write scenes but can't create full movies.

• Job loss fears are overblown because adoption of new tech is slow; it's hype for startup valuations.

• ChatGPT v5 is ~25% better but costs 4x.

• Users actually preferred v4's sycophancy for companionship.

My favorite Pixar movie has historically been WALL-E, but I think I have to change that to Ratatouille on rewatch. The movie has a fair few writing flaws and poorly-aged choices, but it is incredibly charming and optimistic and fun to watch

Doesn't hurt I've learned to cook since last watching it.

a few things I want people to get from this:
-how tense it is here. I was death-gripping the steering wheel during this, even watching it makes me tense up
-how organized the community is. the rapid response networks are ENORMOUS and highly effective
-how completely the city is united against ICE

Molly's being characteristically thoughtful. I'll be more of an asshole: THE AI COMPANIES HAVE USED WIKIPEDIA'S SHIT FOR YEARS. It costs millions of fucking dollars in infrastructure to serve up content to these companies. Should Wikipedia subsidize them? No? Then it's *good* they're getting paid!
I think people are erroneously interpreting the headline to mean that the Wikimedia Foundation is embracing AI for purposes like generating encyclopedia content, or are providing AI companies with more training data than they were already scraping.

One thing I learned working at a social network like Tumblr is that people will be mad at you for literally anything you do.
Also new in v1.114 today: cashtags! Like hashtags, but for stocks.

Tag your posts with #$AAPL, #$NVDA, whatever, then tap to see everyone else's equally unqualified analysis!

The Last Judge in Silksong is a great example of how bullshit this game can be. The fight itself is great, a decently hard skill check that's very readable and the rhythm is really smooth.

Then you win, he turns into a bomb, and if you don't know he does, it kills you and the win doesn't count.

Today at 34 & Park in Minneapolis, a woman tried to drive down the street where a protest had broken out in front of a home ICE was raiding, saying she had a doctor apt to get to. ICE agents busted out her windows, cut off her seatbelt, and pulled her out before arresting her.

We did a ride along. Not with law enforcement. But with the Minneapolis residents defending their communities from those very officers.

You can have whatever opinion you want about AI companies, the impact of AI on tech, its cultural impact, the ways generative AI is contributing to enshittification of the internet, all of that.

But the number of people who think that makes it okay to harass individuals for using AI is... alarming.

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today.

This could be you.

Two queer women with a 6 year old in school today stopped to film ICE and for their bravery ICE agents murdered one before the other’s eyes. The grief in the survivor’s voice is a knife to the gut. Destroying people and their bonds is what ICE has always done.
NEWS: In a heartbreaking video, after ICE shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis, a woman who was in the same SUV cries out: “They killed my wife. I don’t know what to do."

“We stopped to videotape, and they shot her in the head,” the distraught woman sobs.
