Hitting me hard. In Vienna my grandmother hid my mother from Russian soldiers known for raping and worse during the occupation, after the Nazis did the same in WWII. My grandfather had been forced to flee to Poland because he refused to join the Nazi party. He walked back a skeleton after the war.

Officials tweeting about national horrors as if they're passive cable news watchers instead of the people tasked with stopping them is a deliberate form of demoralization. A smug shrug of contempt for the citizenry.

Gavin Newsom is a presidential frontrunner in part because he not only talked the talk about fighting Trump, but came up with and executed a plan to actually do it. Other Democrats should take note. Words and stern letters ain’t sufficient.
