Well y'all, it's September and that means Oktoberfest season has begun.

So it's about time to show odd the Drachtoberfest cast, starting with Stout (1/15).
An 8x8inch illustration featuring a chunky, craggly, grey drake with a giant mug of beer between its forepaws. The dragon's jaws are square and blunt, with short yellow tusks sticking up from the lower jaw, with a tall horn rising above its snout, and yellow curved horns to the side of its head. Runing down the back and short tail are a series of yellow spikes that resemble a mountain range. The top right corner in bold text, STOUT. Detail/closer image of the dragon's head to show off texture and beer foam. A digital mockup enamel pin design of the Stout dragon, based on the previous illustration, using silver metal lines and transparent brown enamel in the beer mug. A digital mockup enamel pin design, using gold toned metal and green transparent enamel in the beer mug.

Ahh I've been busy sorting, folding and packing for Harmonic Flow tomorrow at Strangeways FXBG!

Here's the new shirt design, Cosmic Terrene (featuring the Space Toad). It has glitter, and comes in unisex (XS-4X) and ladies (S-3X).
A maroon and pale orange (with glitter) design featuring a mushroom and crystal planetoid with liquid core, splashing into crystals below. The Space Toad launches into orbit!

Haha y'all... 300ish shirts are done and I picked em up. I was expecting half (one design).

Time to sort. But just enough to pack for Harmonic Flow.

I can't call this one Fairy Ring but that's still the idea.

The waterbrush here is alright. It's probably great for quick layout on the road, and it does restrict the amount of water I can lay down (this watercolor journal is not a fan of big washes), but I prefer natural brush bristles.
A small painting of the Mushroom Witch, a figure in motion with a glowing wand in one gloved hand. Her large hat and poofy dress resemble mushrooms, and she wears sensible boots. Magic waves eminate from the top of the wand, flow over and behind to the other side of her, dropping down in rippling waves that appear to form stacked, wavy mushroom tops. She is surrounded by many other mushrooms in a ring. The piece is soft and warm with tones of golden yellow, brown oranges, and mulberry. A detail crop of the Mushroom witch and her wand. A progress stage of the Mushroom Witch piece with a few mulberry and yellow values blocked in. A pencil sketch that has been inked in purple.

A cropped photo of a shirt design, featuring a floating planetoid, split in half. The top half features mushrooms, the bottom half has crystals sticking out the bottom, and pouring out from the center is some kind of liquid.

The Mushroom Witch in a style I mostly try to use with the SPAAAACE Witch! cast. The Space Toad transcends the boundaries of the cosmos and occupies the time and place of its choosing, always. -ink and watercolors on watercolor rag.
A detail crop of the Mushroom Witch and Space Toad, who looks pleased with itself. A painting of warm yellows, deep blackberry purples, and mulberry. Fluffy, dark mushrooms with white sparkles are in the foreground, the middleground has a witch in a poofy dress, one gloved hand holding up her too large hat and the other holds the blue and black Space Toad, who appears to be vocalizing. The witch has a somewhat bewildered expression at the cosmic visitor in her very earthen surroundings. Two large, luminouse mushrooms rise above the the characters in the background.

Wow that looks fantastic, so deep and creamy!

The original apperance of the Mushroom Witch from Perna Studio's Spellcasters 3 card set, and the second apperance of the Mushroom Witch (and with Space Toad) in a Perna Studio's card set, Elementals 2.

-Copic markers and ink
A witchy figure swishes about a glowing wand. She is surrounded by mushroom types, while her hat and dress are poofy and also resemble mushrooms. In a field of glowing mushrooms, an overly large specimen has a witchy figure and a blue toady blob sitting, in the center of the piece. Some kind of willowy vines drop down from above.

Hey y'all, I'm gonna have a theme this week leading up to my event on Saturday, Harmonic Flow in Fredericksburg, VA!

Fairy Ring, 2021, pencils on strathmore.
A finished illustration in pencil of a young witch kneeling in a soft, grassy like area, surrouned by mushrooms of many types, and bell-shaped flowers on tall stems. The witch has a delighted expression. Below the ring of mushrooms are twinkling stars, while will o' the wisps flit above. Detail crop of the witch figure and mushroom assortment. A sketch of a young witch kneeling, surrounded by mushrooms. Image is framed by a color border. Same as the finished illustration, but smaller with a color border.

It's making picking a base very difficult! Screenprint ink colors on the dark digital base look awful. And I can't pick up a shirt locally to compare. The next closest, Maize, I fear is too light.
studiobliz.bsky.social
So the bonkers thing I'm dealing with at the moment, is on a restock of Drachtoberfest shirts, the same base (BC3001CVC Heather Mustard) I got before appears slightly darker now in the swatch book, but not much, but much darker on the digital mockup. Same with the 3001 Mustard; looks super dark.

It's prime autumn season, y'all! I did this little painting in my watercolor journal recently for reasons.
A finished watercolor and ink image, using shadows of purple and stars to define darker and cosmic-like areas in contrast to the warm yellows and oranges of the pumpkin and foliage. A stage of the watercolor in progress with strong orange and yellow values. A stage of the watercolor in progress with areas lightly blocked in purple, yellow, and orange. A losely inked drawing of autumn elements. Bottom right corner, a large pumpkin with leaf groups to the left, and clove and wheat groups to the right. A crescent moon rises through wispy clouds , behind the pumpkin/leaves, middle left. Middle and top right a shooting star with trails, and top left the outline of an owl.

The special of series 3, Sake, started as a sticker design, a thank you for the for backers of the original Kickstarter. Upgrading it to an illustration and pin was incredibly satisfying. (15/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of an eastern-styled dragon with an incredibly long, noodly, looped and scaled body. Dramatic fin flares of gold and red appear on the back of legs and head, and end of the tail. The dragon has a red face, with blue beard and red crown of hair/fur, plus a pair of deer-like antlers. It holds a warm sake cup. On the top right, vertical red letters read: Sake. Detail/close up of the dragon, focusing on its peaceful expression as it inhales aroma from the warm sake cup, which has two small blue blossoms on it. Photo of the pin design styled after the illustration. Photo of the pin design with added sake pitcher and cup pins.

Kölsch is my fav illustration of series 3, despite not really being a beer type I enjoy. (14/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of a lizard-like dragon, its long thin tail whipping around a thin beer glass thats being tilted over by the dragon, foam sloshing out the top. A row of bone-color spines crown the dragon's head, bright pink racing stripes run down the sides of its green head and neck then blossom over the top of the wings. The lower foot shows pink toe beans, and the back half of the dragon appears almost black. Bottom right corner in thin, leaning, red text: Kölsch Detail/close up of the dragon to show off the whipped beer foam and curled pink tongue. Photo of the pin design styled after the illustration.

I really liked the Harrison Ford movie, and my parents delayed going to their prom to see the finale of the original TV series.

I conflated The Fugitive and The Running Man to my partner, and just thought the internets would appreciate my disconnect and find it amusing.

I knew with series 3 I wanted to have more interactive dragons, hence Dunkel going all in on its beer glass... literally. Also, my first liquid glitter pin! (13/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of a crocodile-like dragon, flopped on its side with the head and heck inside an overturned and mostly empty beer glass. The drake has magenta and mango colored fins/whiskers at its shoulders, behind the arms, and along the tail. Its belly is shades of magenta whiel its back/top is dark greys. Top center, red letters: Dunkel Detail/close up of dunkeldile, focusing on its head, tongue sticking out and eyes focused on a large drop of the remaining beer in the glass. Photo of the pin design styled after the illustration. The beer glass the head is inside is liquid filled with dark brown glitter.

When asked about more beer dragons, Hefeweizen was the most popular ask (folks were super enthusiastic about it, unprompted), so it was the first new brew I knew I'd be depicting. (12/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of a long, very fluffy, feline-like drake with an array of horns over its head that appear like glowing cloves giving off smoke. The drake's body is a deep, desaturated purple, with a long volumunious tail that's vibrant orange. Yellow, orange, and purple spots appear on its back and legs, while the underbelly is a creamy white. It holds a tall glass of golden liquid that is overfilled with foam spilling out while the drake breathes gentle smoke plumes. Top center in red and wavy text: Hefeweizen Detail/close up of the drake, focusing on its languid expression and furry peets. Photo of the pin design styled after the illustration. In the transparent tall beer glass you can see the toebeans of the peets "behind" the glass.

Onto series 3, Cascadian Dark was suggested by a patron at Tekko one year; deep red, notes of pine sap and smoke, near exclusive brew of the PNW. (11/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of a glossy black wyvern looming over a rounded port beer glass which is filled with a deep maroon liquid and heavy foam top. The tips of the wyvern's wings and undersides are bright red, its incredibly long tail loops around the glass dramatically. At the bottom center, text that is squinched vertically reads: Cascadian Dark Detail/close up of the wyvern, focusing on its fierce expression with open jaw and flared headfins. Photo of the pin design styled after the illustration.

Lambic, the special of series 2, was my second pin design with glitter. Were I to redesign it, I would use transparent enamel on the smokey clouds and a pearlescent effect on the belly/forelegs. (10/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of a kirin with scaled green back and olive and tan toned belly/legs/claws/horns. On the head, and tail tuft are swirling raspberry colored clouds. The creature is in motion, with a short, angular glass of deed raspberry colored liquid. On the left, vertical red letters: Lambic. Detail/close up of the kirin, focusing on the raspberry colored swirly clouds on its head and tail. Photo of the original pin design styled after the illustration. It has green glitter on the back.

I perhaps didn't NEED another heavy and smooth beer style depicted, but as I prefer to chew my beer, Porter was going to be represented. (9/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of a chonky and fluffy deep teal drake holding an angled beer mug, its forepaws noticably larger than the rear. The belly, shoulders, and shins have rippling plates of a lighter teal, and along the back are bright yellow and magenta stripey fins. The heavy, round head of the drak has thick, tan spikes and tusks. Detail/close up of the absolute unit of chonky dragon. Photo of the original pin design styled after the illustration. (The first production run had a flaw as they eye was left unfilled!)

Brown Ale I always felt like is the sleeper of series 2. I was especially happy with it's head, and the pin design itself, but caramel notes here is often overlooked in favor of chonkier dragons. (8/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of a warm, caramel colored dragon, curled up like a cat around a tumbler of medium brown beer. The dragon has shiny, turquoise belly plates, spike ridges down the back, and chunky horns. In a soft arc, bottom center, red letters: Brown Ale. Detail/close up of the dragon, focusing on its catlike expression. Photo of the original pin design styled after the illustration. (The caramel brown and turquoise look amazing together.)

When I constructed the Drachtoberfest series I decided to keep each set of 5 with repeating themes: a color, heavy/medium/light, dark, a popular, and a special. Some of those themes were combined in each set, but Eisbock here is the dark of series 2, and my first pin design with glitter. (7/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of an grumpy and spikey dragon of frosty nature. It is holding onto a tumbler of dark beer. The spikes all over its blue body resemble bright ice crystals, and in jagged red letters center bottom : EISBOCK. Detail/close up of the angry, spikey dragon, focusing on the frosty breath. Photo of the original pin design styled after the illustration. The white ice spikes have glitter enamel.

Marzen is the official Oktoberfest beer dragon, so also appears on the Drachtoberfest logo, rampant, styled like a heraldic shield. (6/15)
An 8x8inch illustration of an orange dragon with feather and leather wings in red, yellow, and brown. Its head has a crown of rounded spikes in a floral burst and rests in front of a tall, rounded glass full of amber liquid with foamy top. Its textured tail drops low and around, and between the body and the tail are red letters: Marzen. Detail/close up of the dragon, orange hues abound. Photo of the original pin design styled after the illustration.
