why do so many USB hubs have weird features?

why can't I just buy an externally powered hub with 6 USB-C ports, I don't need HDMI or LAN or a 100W charge port

Can see the design influence on the QE class.

Almost lost all my personal work, a few years ago, because of a hard drive crash.
I had purchased another HD and made a copy of my files, TWO DAYS before it happened (best buy ever, IMHO).
Don't forget the IT moto : "If you have one copy, you have no copy"
Unsolicited artist advice of the day: if you're a freelancer with no back up devices or storage, remember to pick a few things up in the black Friday sales. Even a pen drive to back up your projects so if you have a catastrophic hard drive failure you wont lose everything..learn from my mistakes. 😅

Hey, here's an idea: maybe countries charging residency fees to working immigrants is xenophobic bullshit.

Okay, you know what's really wild, though?

The Wright bros' first flight is closer in time to the Montgolfier bros' first flight than it is to today.

That is some "the pyramids were ancient ruins in Cleopatra's time" level brainfuckery right there.
The first flight of a Gemini capsule is closer in time to the first flight of the Wright brothers than it is to today. (Gagarin passed that point 6 years ago and the SR-71 will in a few weeks.)

The first flight of the F-22 is closer to the first flight of the F-4 than it is to today.

People access this internet website using a mobile app? Like from an app store?

That's a thing that people do? Do they not know the phone app is just a shitty web browser that loads this one site? Do they not know what a web browser is?

2 steps forward, 1 step back

for reasons that are totally unclear, I can't get the linked material drivers to update after reloading the file

so I'm going to have to make them local, which torpedoes the whole concept of having the library in the first place 🤦‍♂️
November 22, 2025 at 3:34 AM
but, I got it working!

second generation toon materials, linked from a master library file, working in the wild! (just the red and yellow so far)
November 22, 2025 at 2:13 AM
Okay, and now I'm bashing my head against the fact that Blender's asset linking system is a broken mess. I have materials disappearing from object slots on reload!

okay lads and lasses I think I've cracked it
position of the empty drives a vector
we subtract EITHER:
0) the local mesh position
1) 0,0,0 (effectively using the pure empty pos as a vector)
using a boolean prop on the empty (circled in white) to toggle the Mix Vectors node

November 21, 2025 at 2:59 PM
okay slight problem
I thought I was going to be able to use an empty to control the light direction by normalizing its object-space coordinates and dot-producting the surface normal
unfortunately the object texture coords in blender rely on the target's position in worldspace
prototype of a new dielectric-hardsurface toon shader

it has a key light vector controlled by an empty and separate tint controls for key/fill lighting, meant to be operated by drivers from a scene control empty
the fill tone is based on a diffuse bsdf so it responds to HDRIs

*sigh*
My object library for Sellsword is getting big enough that I need to start seriously engaging with the Asset Library system and learning how to use it.
First priority is replacing all my 1st generation toon materials with cleaner 2nd gen ones linked from a master library file...
