And the sad reason for this mechanic enduring without changes while similar ones are considered archaic/annoying/bad design/etc is because it was on Aliens

For some reason we don't give the same level of respect to homegrown mechanics that also add an unique flavour and/or purpose to their games.

I could see a situation where a dev would just turn this into a mini-map that gave you all the info you needed because it is more "approachable/accessible" but even on mainstream level there seems to be an understanding that the way it works adds tension that wouldn't be there otherwise.
