What I’m getting at is that choosing to not listen to someone because they are not comfortable for you to listen to is tone policing. And it will not allow for effective change.

I want to encourage people to continue to listen (especially to the most marginalized folx), regardless of whether you deem them “palatable” or not. When you are not familiar with different communication styles or emotionally charged expression, it may feel uncomfortable to hear what is said.

People don’t want to experience being harmed by people they thought were their friends, and people don’t want their friends to be harmful. If you really don’t know then you didnt know, but dismissing it because its hard to comes to terms with doesn’t help anyone. Not even you. 2/2

When people have the impression that you were close to the person they are calling out (Dan), they are less inclined to believe that you know nothing about anything that has been mentioned about the situation. There tends to be intense feelings about this kind of stuff, an rightfully so 1/2

Victim blaming (not having definitive proof to you) isn’t helpful.
Not all instances of assault have “proof to offer”. There are people that make statements over a voice call rather than in writing to ensure they can’t be called put with proof (plausible deniability).
