hey: the Olympics are next month. I'm the president of a regional curling assocation. if you need someone on your show/podcast to discuss curling, particuarly its growth, popularity, culture, and community ties in the USA, I can find someone or, gasp, appear on it myself

Curling umpires (which I have done) famously want to stay the hell out of any rulings. They do not want to babysit deliveries. They will tell players before the event "this is your first hogline violation warning"
I mean, there are officials. They didn't penalize Canada. Then Sweden started randomly bitching to Canada. They deserved the talking-to Kennedy gave them.

I cannot believe that Rachel Homan lost to the USA. I am flabbergasted. More surprising upset than 2018 men’s gold

seeing a lot of online questions about "why isn't Korey Dropkin on the mens team"

the simple answer is: USA Curling does not assemble a team. they have a Trials, invite the top teams, and Dropkin's mens team finished 3rd at trials

USA womens curling has the fun task this morning of playing Rachel Homan and Canada, whose team is probably the best womens curling team of all time
February 13, 2026 at 1:10 PM
yes we know Korey is a hot piece of ass
February 12, 2026 at 11:38 PM
tomorrow the US mens curling team plays Canada and then the US womens curling team plays Canada

this may sting, folks

I may have underestimated USA/Peterson. They’re playing very well against Sweden here. Thiesse just removed four rocks with two stones

My favorite example of this was our Thursday league championsip a few years ago which featured opposing skips of age 87 and 17
Same. Also, because of my club's youth curling program, teenagers are also common opponents and part of the social groups.

I absolutely love curling as a sport that challenges me mentally and physically, but what really draws me is the social connection of a team, a league, and a club. As the OP notes in a comment, our league has an age range from early 20s to 76 years old. And everyone socializes together. It’s lovely.
This is a wonderful column about the vital function of the curling club as a social connection

You’re not gonna see this facet at the Olympics, you just need to see it for yourself
Beyond the medals: Curling as social infrastructure
As attention focuses on the Games in Italy, we ought to look beyond the podium to social connections made at our local arenas.

Any time my partner would mention a job opening that appealed to him in another city, I would say, “okay, but is there a curling club there?”

Not because I am an awesome curler, but because it provides an instant social circle.

The Olympics are one of the things that draws new people to curling. The social connections are why they stay. My wife and I kept traveling to our old club after we moved across the city because we adored our teammates so much.

It can't be overstated what an incredible third space curling clubs are. You don't even need to fork often or at all to be a big part of it!
