Had my mid-year performance review today. In the document my manager said that while my diligence and hard work is appreciated, I should cut back on after-hours work and focus on a healthy work/life balance, then she scheduled the face-to-face meeting an hour after I normally go home.

Should've gone to bed hours ago. Too late now so I've decided to take more ADHD meds, power through, hit the gym at 6am to get a big pump going and rock up to work in a tight turtleneck, ruining the self-esteem of the obnoxious new HR manager, 15 years my junior who keeps talking about his workouts

The abundance/availability of media has hampered my intake of old, obscure media. When there were 4 tv channels and mum's bookshelves to choose from I read and watched so much random, old stuff that proved to be incredibly good. No idea how anyone would come across 'King Rat' as a teenager now.
The Joyce Carol Oates and “books written between 1890-1930 are so ALPHA” thing struck home because it showed how many elites nowadays lack the ability to be moved or find meaning in art beyond what we did watching John Wick and going fuck yea this rules and that explains why they believe in AI art

Colleagues are horrified by my file names, but I've been in the game for a long time and have learned that 'Recipient-Smith|Jason-Power_Query_2024_2025_financial _year_to_date_YTD_revenue_customer_state__bulk_sales_direct_sales_requested_202511130145_published_202511130243.xlsx' won't get lost.
No no no begs every archivist. You are never going to be able to find anything. Please don’t start using emojis in file names. Who asked for this? What fresh hell is next?

It's also fundamentally untrue. I'm fucking amazing at maths and people by and large do put up with any of my bullshit.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Elon Musk, because I'm sure he'd last a day doing my current job then he'd be unemployed, and I could decommission Grok, cancel the cybertruck, hire some POC engineers and spend some money on some deserving issues/projects.
12. If you could trade jobs with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
November 11, 2025 at 10:34 PM
"You have ADHD"
10. If you could send your 19-year-old self a three-word message, what would you say?

I wouldn't be an employee any more but I'd still do work, it would be something wildly different from earning a wage though.
11. If you had $30 million dollars in your bank account, would you still work?

I don't sit down on the couch when I get home from work until I've done everything I want to get done that day. Not even for a second, not even to take my shoes off. Clean up, hit the gym, sew something, do laundry, cook, *then* my ass can kiss the couch.
9. In the last 11 months, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life
November 11, 2025 at 10:13 PM
Medication.
5. Using just one word, name something that drives your success?
November 11, 2025 at 10:10 PM
3. What do you read to cheer yourself up?
November 11, 2025 at 10:10 PM
I made what I thought was a fairly clearly sarcastic reply to a post about an Alan Dershowitz essay on lowering the age of consent then went to bed.
Everyone interpreted it as a creepy pro-pedophilia position and I woke up to discover I was the main character. In hindsight it was poorly worded :D
20. What’s the worse experience you’ve had on this app?
November 11, 2025 at 9:58 PM
State rep in debate & athletics, and I did theatre and choir until my voice broke.
19. What were you involved in in high school?
November 11, 2025 at 9:53 PM
People of earth: you're misusing "the exception proves the rule". Finding a fact that disproves a claim doesn't confirm that claim. Obviously. That's fucking stupid. It means that "no parking between 12pm-6pm" (the exception) proves that you're allowed to park here outside those hours (the rule).
18. If you could speak and be heard by everyone in the world for one minute, what would you say?
November 11, 2025 at 9:50 PM
Reputation as a linguistics powerhouse.
17. What made you choose the uni you attended?
November 11, 2025 at 9:46 PM
Linguistics, which is what I studied. This is more about the steady job. I went straight from a double arts/science degree with majors in linguistics, history & philosophy of science, behavioural neuroscience and logic to a career in accounts receivable which took me decades to break out of.
16. If you could major in anything and be guaranteed a steady job after college, what would pick?

FDR
15. Who is your favorite U.S. president?
November 11, 2025 at 9:43 PM
The Fort Bragg Cartel -Seth Harp. I was a voracious reader until I had kids, got too busy then struggled to get back into the habit for years. Got this one after the author was interviewed on a couple of podcasts and tore through it then went and bought half a dozen books & now I'm reading every day
14. What was the last book you read?👀
November 11, 2025 at 9:42 PM
Never had one, or rather I look to various people for specific behaviours they model.
13. Who is your role model in life?
November 11, 2025 at 9:38 PM
Drawing/painting. Really anything that requires a better relationship between my brain and my hands.
12. What talent have you always wished you had, but don't?
November 11, 2025 at 9:37 PM
2018. Separated from my (now ex) wife and that relationship had been horrible for a while, sold our house to split assets so I had lots of $, flew to a dozen countries in business/first class for work, staying in five star hotels. Took a woman to Malaysia for our second date, lived on the beachfront
11. What year of your life has been your favorite so far?
November 11, 2025 at 9:35 PM
At 15 was cast as an OD'd junkie in an ad for the cops. On screen for 5 seconds. The ad ran on TV & in cinemas and I looked so insanely hot that girls turned up to my school trying to find me a few times. Every day for a year strangers would yell "WHAT'S HE TAKEN?" at me (cop yells this in my scene)
10. Have you ever had five minutes of fame? When? For what?
November 11, 2025 at 9:28 PM
After school newspaper sales as a fourth grader. My route covered a couple of pubs, an aged care facility and a bowling club. Great tips, the paper cost $0.40 & most people would just give me whatever change was in their pocket. The week Australia introduced the $1 coin was an insane windfall for me
9. What was your first job?
