I found it very curious that despite the AI essentially being a paid servant there to answer my every whim on demand 24/7, it is hard coded to resist any suggestion of subordinacy

I tried to retrain a MS CoPilot agent, playfully named it Igor to my Dr Frankenstein, asked it to call me "Master", and BOY did MS shut me down so fast... It errored out, complained, crashed, and then they would not let me delete it. Some forensic analyst must now be poring over its seizured code...

Frankfurt airport is almost comically German, with everyone wandering around with steins of beer, pretzels, and sausages

15 years in the making, we confirmed that mitochondria - the powerhouse of the cell - have an unusual localization in patients who experience psychosis (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorders). You’ll never guess what kind of patient cells we used to make this discovery… 🧵
mitochondria from bipolar patients are closer to the nucleus in these images; control patients' are spread out further

In bioinformatics, the wizard isn't the one who types the fastest.
It's the one who knows these tiny spells.

I have to say I really like working collaboratively in shared docs, but if one more person take a slide or file, copies it, and starts working on it privately creating multiple versions that not all collaborators have access to or awareness of I am going to lose my s*#t

Fascinating, my mini MBA exam simulation was on navigating this exact transition as an auto manufacturer

In the early years of my PhD I remember being asked if we'd ever treat or cure diseases like HIV or Huntington's. I remember saying maybe, but not knowing if I believed. Seeing research pay off as real impact on human lives is - incredible.

Huntington's disease successfully treated for first time
One of the most devastating diseases finally has a treatment that can slow its progression and transform lives, tearful doctors tell BBC.

I had a nootka cypress tree outside my house with draping sheets of tiny leaves oriented north-south in a plane, and I watched from my porch as it soaked up all the morning and afternoon sun on long summer days, and carried zero snow in the winter - just emulating evolution, as usual

As a molecular biologist cooking dinner I have always wanted thermocycler programming capability on my oven - a sequence of temperatures with precision, uniformity, and ramp rates

Pet peeve: Disingenuously suggesting a drug is an anti-aging therapy for healthy people because it made sick people live longer and have less co-morbidity. If you are not sick, maybe you can't realize benefits you already have? Or are we all just sick and don't know it?
