The Prince of Tennis (PlayStation 1, 2002) When I started this game, I’d never gotten into The Prince of Tennis but had to see what the fuss was all about, given how much media was released for it. I tried to watch the anime in preparation, but I gave up pretty quickly. It’s about a bratty kid who is exceptionally good at tennis but awful with manners. Opponents show up who are dicks to him, and then... he’s even more of a dick, but wins. Alongside the ‘prince’ name referring to him acting like a spoiled kid, it’s also a reference to his father supposedly being amazing at tennis, but that’s not the focus of these first anime arcs. It goes on for 178 episodes and, at the end, doesn’t really conclude, just talks about how they’ll keep practising for the next tournament. It’s not my thing! It’s the kind of series you can pretty much imagine how it plays out. An opposing tennis team seems really strong and has some kind of killer technique, but the bratty kid and his team manage to overcome it and win, then everyone cheers. Konami’s The Prince of Tennis on PlayStation 1 looks, at a glance, like it should be a straightforward sports tie-in. Just a typical tennis game, but with familiar characters and art style. In reality, the game is completely unlike what I expected. For the first few matches, it felt like a turn-based tile-targeting tennis game. You have no control over your player’s movements. You only choose where you’re going to aim the ball, what kind of shot you’re going to make, and be careful not to run out of stamina. It then shows your probability percentages that you’ll hit the ball and the other person will hit it back, you watch the shot play out, then repeat it until someone wins six full games. It seemed really slow-paced! As a result, I almost gave up on playing it after the first few matches. It wasn’t until I got used to the gameplay mechanics and what to expect that I started to enjoy it. The game’s main appeal is its Story Mode and a very large image gallery, with 132 images total to unlock. The character artwork would be a huge appeal for fans of the series, as they’re in full colour with far more detailed shading than the anime. There’s occasional voice acting too, but only for key points of the story. Most of the dialogue is displayed through text alone. Personally speaking, I started off being impressed by the gallery's size, but once you realise that almost every image is going to be an action shot of a guy hitting a ball, it’s a feature that gets old quickly. The most interesting part is that it follows the anime, or at least what was released of the anime at the time the game came out. It’s roughly the first 48 episodes or so, the arcs covering the protagonist joining the tennis team, then competing in the first couple of tournaments against other schools. Starting the new year with zine coverage of Namco's Family Tennis for the Famicom, and more fascinating to me, the Viva Nonnon credit at the very end!
Family Tennis (Famicom, 1987) When I was younger, I enjoyed the Smash Court series of Tennis games by Namco. It was around that time that I learned the Japanese versions of those games are wildly different. At the time, I was fine with differences in the English versions, but Anna Kournikova's Smash Court Tennis had so much personality removed compared to Smash Court 2. I then realised that I was missing out on a lot of interesting material. Now I want to go back to old tennis games and play their Japanese versions to see what I was missing! Family Tennis was Namco’s first tennis game, released on the Famicom in 1987, and was Japan-exclusive. It looks like a simple sports game at first glance, but it has a couple of genuinely surprising features. Right away, it’s worth highlighting that it contains a CPU vs CPU “Watch” mode. I love these modes in games! I used to make little pretend tournament brackets and cheer for a player. The main modes are Exhibition, Tournament, and World Tour. Exhibition and tournament modes are as expected, but the World Tour serves as the career climb, with six successive tournaments and messages from your coach. There are 16 characters in total, loosely based on real-world tennis player names. There are twelve men and four women. The women are especially notable as they all have larger tennis rackets, which make it easier to return the ball. It’s an intentional choice to make playing as the women slightly easier. Examples of real-life allusions to player names include Makarou (John McEnroe), Noanoa (Yannick Noah), and Sabochiini (Gabriela Sabatini). I went with Suteppii (“Steppy”), a parody of Steffi Graf, the German tennis player. Tennis matches in this game are very lengthy, just like the real sport. You need to win six games to finish one match, and of course, there are several matches per tournament... and with six tournaments total, it’s a real commitment if you want to see it to the end. Each tournament has its own court type. After winning tournaments, your coach encourages you with bizarre ‘tips’ that are actually password sentences entered in Japanese characters. "Oh, Steppy — you did a great job! Before the next match, I’ll give you some advice. Listen up. Hear me well. Aoi Koneko no Hitomi is weak. Now go! Steppy — the road to becoming a pro is a tough one!" After ‘Listen up. Hear me well.” The coach will say something different. The ‘Aoi Koneko no Hitomi is weak.’ part (or あおいこねこのひとみはよわい。) is actually the password. The password for beating the third tournament as Steppy was ‘よわいさんまのおちちはまるい。’ which translates to ‘Yowai Sanma has round breasts.’ The password method is probably the core reason the game was never localised for English audiences. Where the first five tournaments use Hard, Grass, and Clay courts, the final tournament has a unique Space Court that makes it all worth it. Not only is it more visually interesting, but when the ball goes out of the court, there’s a sound effect and an animation of it falling into space! It’s a great way to have a memorable finale for a tennis game. After winning, the coach's message changes into a final celebration: Oh, Steppy — you really did great! This is all the result of your hard work and dedication. I can feel it, baby! Tears are the sweat of the heart. Come on, Steppy — let’s run toward the setting sun! You then see your character standing on top of the planet Earth, hitting balls toward the screen, with each ball having a pseudonym credit name attached. Piccari Club is an internal group at Namco, but that final Viva Nonnon credit sent me down an entirely new rabbit hole! The Japanese text above it translates to ‘Did you do your homework? Go take a bath.’ Namco's Sky Kid has a similar message. It’s an in-joke of sorts, an early meme, based on a Japanese comedy/music group from the 1960s called 'The Drifters' who often made songs with a hot springs theme. They said it very frequently in the track titled ‘It's a nice bath - Vivanon Rock.’ It means nothing at all. It’s just something they’d say as a fun interjection! Technically, the song itself is a cover of an existing hot springs song with the same name, originally sung by a male quartet called ‘Duke Aces,’ but this original version didn’t have the Viva Nonnon calls. This song was then used as the ending theme for two popular variety shows: 8時だョ!全員集合 (’It’s 8 o’clock, everyone gather!’) andドリフ大爆笑 (’The Drifters’ Big Laugh). Because of that, it seems to have caught on as a pop-culture reference to quote right before something reaches its end. Viva nonnon!
