(related to nazis as in, the origin of the ideology)

while most likely not related to nazis, i also sometimes think of the pogroms that happened as far as 1096 when the history of european antisemitism is discussed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinela...

The standard—and not totally incorrect—narrative is that the US basically abandoned transit after WWII, but there was a real revival underway in the 1970s that stalled out by the mid-1980s as the political winds shifted. Things have improved since, but we've never fully recovered that ambition.

UMTA R&D spend from 1972-1989. The amounts in the 1980s appear to be overstated as a lot of those projects were commissioned in the 1970s and were finishing up. Dollars are not adjusted for inflation.

New spend by the late 80s was down to $13m/yr, $3m/yr of which went into 'privatization' =>
Tables of new R&D spend between 1985-1989. Spending on research related to train and system design had been entirely zeroed out. Table of R&D spend from 1972-1985. The wind-down begins in 1982.

british railroads should get themselves a treat (getting rid of the ridiculously small victorian loading gauge)

"explain it to me like I'm five beers in" would be a funny as hell way to teach someone how to model railroad.
tapesinside.bsky.social
also it’s something similar to super8 film where i’m too young for this
tapesinside.bsky.social
something similar applies to vinyl to me. i’m not as interested in a playback only medium
tapesinside.bsky.social
i’m not as autistic about something that sounds the same as the files i have on my computer. it doesn’t have the same magic feeling that analog audio tape does
tapesinside.bsky.social
alternatively, it’s the same reason why i don’t find digital physical media as interesting as the analog ones. for example, minidiscs look sick, but if i ever got a player and some discs, i would probably keep using my tape walkman and the discs would be display pieces

i have no idea if this makes any sense, PDAs do sound like devices that should be really cool to me, but they just aren’t
tapesinside.bsky.social
camcorders? cool as shit
flat screen TVs? also
phones that could do more than do calls, messages and play J2ME games? fuck yeah
home theater stuff, computers that were also media powerhouses? you sound like you made it

PDAs? ..not so much?
tapesinside.bsky.social
also probably
- i’m a 2000s kid but i’m also from a place/culture/society where it feels like PDAs weren’t desirable. people would nerd out about at least most of the stuff if they had money to afford it but not PDAs, i don’t remember a single person around me that had one
tapesinside.bsky.social
on a very unrelated note, i don’t really get the retro appeal of PDAs, i think it’s one of the three:
- i’m too ADHD to utilize one fully
- i’m too practical, all of the data keeping stuff can be done with my phone
- i prefer interacting with technologies and workflows that were lost after 2008

netbooks are PDAs of the late 2000s
