I like reading books about books, listening to jangly guitar music, and watching Philadelphia sports teams break my heart.
This was my finals match. They’ll have to fight it out for third!

The great Jimmy Cliff passed away.

I think the best way to honor him is by voting for the Beastie Boys, who sampled "Stop That Train" on B-Boy Bouillabaisse.
It's a sign from above.

But I love DLS too.

All the gigs I went to this year:

Michael Shannon/Jason Narducy
Dead Milkmen
MJ Lenderman
Ducks Ltd.
Pulp
Mountain Goats
Geese
All the gigs I went to this year:

Nick Lowe
Courtney Barnett
Maya Ongaku
Minami Deutsch
Memorials
Shintaro Sakamoto
Geese

All brilliant. Day 2 of Woodsist also brilliant but that's a festival as compared to a gig. Levon Rambles as well but that's more of a hootenanny.

Happy new year to all.

Octavia Butler is a master. Recommended!
Cached US Kindle giveaway, courtesy of @jtmcomments.bsky.social: 6 copies of Octavia E Butler's Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, which I do not have, and have not read.

Saw that today is the birthday of Gene Clark, the great songwriter from the Byrds. Before I dive into some sixties classics, I am going to start the day with this fuzzed out tribute.

Geese delivered a raucous, high energy show. It’s been a while since I’ve been to show with a real pit. Hope those guys got their shoes back!

Absolutely entertaining list here.
(I can't believe no one picked "Powderfinger"--although the great Ryan Davis gives it some props.)

Never caught the now obvious nod to "Pocahontas" in R.E.M's overlooked "Me, Marlon Brando..."

Fun to read and then play the songs along to!
Aside from the joy of reading about so many people's deep connection with this music (and the fun of seeing which artists picked the same songs), one of the best parts of editing this has been spending the week mainlining Neil Young albums all day long. The catalog just gives and gives.

More senators (and their aides) should watch football. Imagine watching a stadium full of people booing the president and thinking, "Yeah, we should just give him what he wants."

The most terrifying aspect of the movie is that it forces the viewer to imagine all the ways the current commander-in-chief and "Secretary of War" would absolutely screw this up.

The thing about picking your top five R.E.M. songs is that's impossible. I read everyone's list and agreed with each one. Such a catalog. For what it's worth, here's mine for today:
5. Country Feedback
4. New Test Leper
3. Talk About the Passion
2. So. Central Rain
1. Find the River

Phillies fans: does the ghost of Joe Carter loom so large in our collective pain that we would actively root for the Dodgers? Is Ohtani's greatness so transcendent that we can root for a team from California? Genuinely conflicted here.
