There is much to celebrate in October - yesterday was the start of Diwali, the Festival of Lights!

To all who observe, we’re wishing lots of joy, light, and mithai this Diwali! We hope that this marks the beginning of a bright and prosperous new year.
Dr. Rodrigo T. Calado is a member of our Medical Advisory Board as well as our South America Medical Advisor. Dr. Calado has has helped to characterize the molecular genetics of Telomere Biology Disorders and work to develop novel therapies.
Next up is Mayra Garcia, our Hispanic/Latino Ambassador! From the very first day her son was found to have a mutation in DKC1, her and her family looked for ways to advocate for him and search for a perfect match. She always sought the very best for Julian - and brings this to our community.
Dr. Alfredo de Jesús Rodríguez Gómez is a biologist and Doctor of Science from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. His lab focuses on diagnosing bone marrow failure syndromes, conducting cytogenetic follow-up, and identifying biomarkers for early cancer detection in these patients.
We also acknowledge the systemic barriers that many in the Latinx community face when accessing healthcare.

We are honored to highlight some of the incredible Latinx TBD community whose work, advocacy, and leadership are creating incredible strides.
As National Hispanic Heritage Month comes to an end, Team Telomere celebrates the achievements and cultural contributions of Latinx Americans. Established in 1988, this month honors the rich histories and diversity of the Latinx community and their profound impact on United States culture.
Thanks to Ben Tran with Tran Creative for his work with the Native Tribes and providing this beautiful graphic to share.

We also want to honor Rachelle Cobell for her time writing these words in 2022. 1982-2023

Educating our clinicians on how to work with Indigenous Communities at our Scientific Summit, giving our families precious time and experiences during our Community Summit, and generously funding our mission.
The disparities are glaring with Native peoples and it is our duty not just listen to the needs of their communities but act as active allies and partners.

We want to thank the Coeur d’Alene Tribe for hosting us on their sovereign land.
We acknowledge their rights as sovereign nations, and work to help ensure the promises made within the multiple treaties signed with various tribes across our nation are fulfilled.

These promises include rights to sacred lands, natural resources, education and #HealthCare.
#IndigenousPeoplesDay went into effect in the United States in 2021. We celebrate by honoring Indigenous Peoples and acknowledging the health disparities found in this nation.
Every event Team Telomere hosts is designed to support the community we love, allowing opportunity for you to be involved. From Base Camp activities and games to Camp Sunshine goodies, we can always count on special people to sponsor our events.
“Team Telomere was there for me during one of the darkest times in my life. Receiving a diagnosis of a rare disease can feel very isolating. For families like ours, it’s a lifeline, a community that turns isolation into support and fear into courage.” - Community Member
Whether you're thriving, struggling, or somewhere in between - your feelings are valid. Healing isn’t always linear, but every step forward counts.
Let’s take today to:

💬 Talk openly about mental health

🧠 Check in with ourselves and others

🤝 Offer support without judgment

🕊️ Advocate for better mental health services
This year’s theme is about making mental health a universal human right. That means access to support, resources, and care for everyone, everywhere, without stigma or shame.
Today is World Mental Health Day, a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health - and that no one should face their struggles alone.
We’ve launched a digital natural history study for TBDs! Help accelerate research by securely organizing your de-identified health data.
