And the Commandant, possibly out of a spirit of mischief, made no attempt to enlighten her.

He did, however, ensure that the NCOs impressed upon their soldiers the importance of the tradition to the Americans, the honor being granted them, and the need to not embarrass Queen and Country.

So he had a spoonful, entered a state of blissful rapture, realized there wouldn't possibly be enough, talked the family recipe out of her, and made four more batches that night.

Anyway, he was so occupied by candied yam that he didn't realize that the only dessert was pie.

Pecan and pumpkin

As I heard it told, the senior exchange officer's wife brought them by the night before. He apparently displayed a visually apparent WTF at the dish, so she invited him to try some.

And what with her being a colonel's wife and all, he couldn't figure out how to refuse.

Much as he wanted to.

This led to the chef, whose horror at having Americans invade his domain had been replaced with real enthusiasm at the idea of doing an American Thanksgiving dinner, experiencing some things.

Specifically, he experienced candied yams. The kind with the marshmallows. Which he'd never heard of.

My wife really loves this tradition.

Problem: In general, junior soldiers aren't assigned as exchange officers.

Solution: My wife convinced the Commandant at Middle Wallop to lend her (and the other US exchange officers in the area) some of his soldiers. And his Officer's Mess.

And the chef.

OK - pie discourse - best pie story:

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

I have long posited that Daniel Craig's accent in Glass Onion is better than Knives Out because in Knives Out he is trying to do a real Southern accent and is bad at it but in Glass Onion he is just talking like Foghorn Leghorn, which is something a real gay Southern weirdo would do.

There’s no nice way to say this: promoting anti-vax bullshit while kids are dying of vaccine preventable illnesses is tantamount to murder, and should be treated as such in the media and the courts.

The CDC has not addressed this and is largely pretending it isn’t happening. Meanwhile they’re taking steps to actively reduce vaccination rates.
Pertussis cases in Texas are 10x higher than all of 2023, and 2x as high as last year — 4x for the same period. The official count is higher by a 1k than it has been in more than a decade. Last time it was over 2k was 2014 with 2,576. It’s past 3,500 for 2025.

Pertussis outbreaks have been predictably happening everywhere there are low vaccination rates, and infant deaths have happened in multiple states. In many places they’re the highest in a decade or more.
This may not sound like a lot compared to Texas but WV is roughly 5-6% the size of TX. This is a big deal.

After two infants died, the Louisiana Dept of Health under the leadership of the new incoming deputy director of the CDC, delayed notifying the public for months of a whooping cough outbreak. Instead, he ordered DOH to stop promoting vaccines. Pertussis is currently a national health crisis.
Louisiana officials waited months to warn public of whooping cough outbreak
After a whooping cough outbreak killed two infants, Louisiana health officials waited months to officially alert physicians or do public outreach. That's not the typical public health response.

Did you really read this whole long thread? Wow! Go spread the word: DOGE isn't actually over.
The "DOGE is gone" articles are clickbait but this one gets it closer to the truth: DOGE is not gone, it just claims to have "no centralized leadership" anymore -- in other words, its leadership is hiding in an attempt to avoid blame.
DOGE no longer has ‘centralized leadership’ under White House tech team, personnel head says
The team that was altered to house DOGE — formerly the U.S. Digital Service — is also still doing its own technology work across agencies.

They're not esoteric. Any of the conspiracy theories that shaped DOGE's mission can be found easily by browsing Twitter or Facebook for a few minutes. Apparently billionaire brains get cooked by social media in exactly the same way poor people brains do.

Anyway, this is just my experience as a software engineer; I haven't even touched the stuff DOGE did to public health or foreign aid. But from a distance it looks pretty clearly motivated by the same swirl of anti-government, anti-minority conspiracy theories.

DOGE stole the phrase "waste, fraud, and abuse" from government regulations, where it is used to prohibit corrupt contracts, and inverted its meaning:

They use it to mean a leftist conspiracy imagined to engage in the financial corruption that DOGE is actually doing by self-dealing gov contracts
