They key to success of the bill is getting the strike price right - too low and it won't stimulate the UK industry, too high and oil companies will start complaining @transenvuk.bsky.social

This is now alongside the announcement that Luton Airport expansion has also been green lit. From our airport expansion tracker, you can see the dangerous situation the Government is walking us into. Expansion is just not compatible with our climate goals. 4/5

Business flights are on a consistent decline, and particularly with Gatwick - dubbed the “bucket and spade” airport - the tourism deficit will take billions more out of the country than it brings in. 3/5

The decision to grant Gatwick’s expansion goes against the government’s own planning inspectors. It fails on climate, and will create extra air + noise pollution for thousands of people surrounding the airport. 1/5

So, what exactly will the climate impact be from 100,000 additional flights from Gatwick airport? How many million tonnes of CO2 (and non-CO2 impacts)?

Government clearly see this as unimportant. Apparently the media does too - this figure is absent from all coverage.

Vanita Suneja grapples with the fallibility of memory and nostalgia, coming to the conclusion that while we can ‘romanticise’ the past, we must also campaign for the “convenience built into low-energy choices”. 2/2

The FT looks at the challenges facing ICAO’s offsetting scheme CORSIA.

“Politically, it [Corsia] runs the risk of unravelling,” said Tim Johnson, AEF.

More importantly, “it’s not getting the carbon price up — it’s in crisis for that reason alone.”

Why is aviation so slow to decarbonise?

International flight has been around for under 100 years, but it's responsible for 4% of total global warming to date. Radio 4’s ‘Rethink’ podcast discusses some solutions... 🤓

Another hidden environmental cost of flying?

Using AI generates high levels of emissions, adding to the already heavy pollution cost of travelling by air. 2/2
