This is the thread for my minicomic, Into the Bladelands! I will be posting updates of anywhere from 2-4 pages here, hopefully to be finished before the end of the year.

Sky disappears. Ari gets left behind. Five years later, the door to the Bladelands opens again.
Into the Bladelans cover Ari (vo): When I was sixteen, my best friend disappeared. We grew up together in the woods between our houses. Sky could have fun no matter what. Sky: Pick up your sword and fith me like a man! Ari: Wait for me! Ari (vo): My favorite thing to do was just live in his world. Bully: Whatcha drawin, faggots? The map to your honeymoon? Sky punches him. Later, Ari tends to his wounds. Sky: You probably think I'm really stupid. Ari: I just think you're really brave. They kiss. Sky: We can't tell anyone about this, okay? Ari: Yeah, of course. A couple years pass. Sky and Ari are looking at the stars. Sky: Y'know, I think about it all the time. Ari: What we've been doing? Sky: No, man, the Bladelands! We'd run shit over there. Be warriors or kings or whatever. Ari: Heh, too bad it's not real. Sky: well, it could be. Ari: Dude. Sky: I'm just saying! Maybe we were picking up a signal or something. Like a radio station from another state, but with dragons. It feels like that sometimes. Y'know, I turn 17 tomorrow. And I'm starting to freak out a little because, like, this is it? I thought I could be more than this. Ari: Hey, you can be! When we're 18, we can get out of here. We'll move to the city. Together. Sky: I guess... it still just all feels so small. At least in the Bladelands, there's magic. And prophecy, and swords, and danger. You can be an adventurer. You can at least be, like, an important person. Ari: You're important, Sky. You're important to me. Sky: Heh. Gayyy. Ari: Shut up. Ari (VO): That was the last night I ever saw him. Ari walks away. Sky spots a mysterious portal behind a tree and reaches out to it. Ari (Vo): The next day, he was gone. We see a montage of Ari's lonely life. Sky's parents mourn and move away. Ari graduates. Gets a job working at a bookstore. The impromptu memorial for Sky rots. Ari (VO): And the next. And the next. And the next. And the next. And the next. And then five years were gone.

Five years after Sky disappeared, Ari is walking into the woods behind his childhood home. He's on the phone with his mom, and it's nighttime. Ari (on phone): No, I told you, Ma. I can't make it to dinner. It's the anniversary. ... What I always do. I need this, okay? I'll see you guys next week. He opens one of the two cans he brought with him and puts it in the grass on the hill beside him. Ari, sighing: Hey, Sky. It's Ari again. Been a while. Some time passes. Ari: So, remember how last year I said I was sure the new Game of Thrones book was gonna come out? Guess who looks like a big idiot now? I dunno, I sort of hope he doesn't ever finish the series at this point. Some things are better when they don't have a real ending. Like you. Cheers, Sky. He clinks the cans together, but the can set aside for Sky starts rolling down the hill, spilling beer everywhere. Ari: Aw, shit. He chases it to the base of the hill and sees something sparkling behind a tree. Ari: What... what the hell? He reaches behind the same tree Sky reached behind five years ago. He emerges into a forest in midday. Ari: Hel... Hello? Hello? Hell-- He's interrupted by an arrow thrumming straight past his head. Ari: Ah! Elf: Halt! State your business, stranger. We see an elf woman with red hair and a bow and arrow. She's in front of a sprawling landscape that includes a forest, a camp and a castle in the distance. Elf: Poaching in the Princewood is punishable by death.

A young man with long blonde hair and a scar across his face appears, partially obscured behind some trees. It is immediately apparent who he is. Sky: Zerra! Zerra, what's going on over there? The elf, Zerra: Sky! I told you to stay hwere it was safe while I made sure- Sky: Come now, it's my anni... versary. Sky and Ari lock eyes for the first time. Ari, shocked and in tears: Sk... Sky? Sky tears up also. Sky: hhh. heh. it's... it's Ari. He breaks into a run, going to sweep Ari into a hug. Sky: IT'S ARI! Zerra: Uh, who? They embrace. Sky: It's Ari. It's Ari. It's Ari. Ari: It's me? it's YOU! How are you even real? How are you alive? You were gone. You were dead. Sky pulls back to get a good look at him. Sky: Gone? Yes. Dead? Not just yet. Ari, don't you know where we are? It's the bladelands. It's real, Ari. It's all real. Always has been. Just like I thought. Gods, you look so well. So young! Other than the scruff, you look just the same. Ari: Heh, I guess. I dunno. But this does explain her. He waves awkwardly at Zerra. Her elf ears assume an expression that resembles someone cocking their eyebrows. Ari: If we're in the bladelands, that's why there's an elf.

I can't handle all this. Sky (unbothered): Oh, this is fantastic, Zer! Ari was my very best friend in the Other World. We dreamed of the Bladelands together. That's probably how he was able to get here, all these years later. Took you long enough, old friend. You missed the revolution! Ari: The huh? the wuh? They start walking toward the camp together. Sky: Come on, come on, I have so much to show you. Everyone's here for the anniversary of my arrival. You're not gonna believe this, Ari. The Bladelands are all united now. All the way from Westmark to Cobalt. Melleor, Allcourt, Zennia, even Darknight! I've pulled them all together under one banner. My own. The sun starts sinking a little lower in the sky. Ari: Your own? Sky: You're looking at the Conquering Prince of all the Bladelands. Ari: Hah, sure. Zerra, annoyed: Hey! Watch how you behave in the Prince's presence. Sky: Relax, Zerra. If you knew me in the Other World, you'd be surprised too. Everything is different here, Ari. Especially for people like us. You can make anything happen here, just by wanting it enough. You can actually make a difference. There's a lot of magic here, no doubt, but nothing like this. We're here hunting a unicorn, even though they haven't been seen in generations. But you'll see, I have a good feeling. Ari: Well, if that's all true, why aren't you a prince? Why aren't you a king yet? Sky looks genuinely offended for a moment. Sky: I will be. Soon. Sky, recovering: Heh.. *sniff* I'll show you around, I suppose. They go into camp, where everyone greets Sky. Ari (VO): I should have known better than to doubt him. They visit an orc armorer. Brill: Sky! Zerra! Who do we have here? Sky: Brill, meet Ari. Ari, this is my loyal comrade, Brutill Killdeath. We all go way back. Brill, can he try a sword? Brill: Well... Cut to Ari trying a sword. Ari: Woah! Brill: Hey, yer a natural! Ari, Sky and Zerra go to another tent, a big hall with a bard singing and drink flowing. They then go see baby dragons in little hutches. Sky: Look, they still have their baby spots. Ari (VO): The Bladelands were just like he'd always said. Just like we'd always dreamed. Ari gets changed into brown trousers and a green tunic. He emerges clean-shaven. Sky: Perfect! You look just like a local. And you sure needed that shave. Ari: Where in the Bladelands are we, anyway? Sky: On the border between Westmark and Darknight. The castle on the horizon? That's my home in Westmark. Ari: I'm starting to remember all the lore again. Didn't the Weston family live there?

An old priestess/cleric design from December 2021 when I had an OCT idea rooted in my head involving her as the hostess. I still quite like this design, but ultimately scrapped her as she didn't quite fit.

We live in a country where restaurants trash thousands of pounds of perfectly good food every day while huge swathes of people live in food deserts and I'm supposed to get upset if someone gets a parking spot they aren't entitled to for 20 minutes? I don't have few enough problems to care about it
