“The Nerves That Fuck Up My Life”

Watercolor, graphite, embroidery floss, and thread.

A mixed media piece about my experience living with chronic pain from Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.
A watercolor painting of a ribcage, neck, and head of a human skeleton. The ribcage is missing the top right rib, as the artist had the same rib removed as part of surgery for Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. A diagram of the nerves of the thoracic outlet, brachial plexus, and head are sewn onto the skeleton. The major nerves are done with thicker yellow embroidery thread, and the smaller ones with thinner yellow sewing thread. The painting was made with the colors French Ultramarine, Permanent Rose, and Raw Sienna. The majority of the skeleton is Raw Sienna, while the shadows are done with French Ultramarine and Permanent Rose. The right eye of the skeleton is filled in with Permanent Rose, while left is Raw Sienna like most of the skeleton.

I redid this comic from awhile back.

Flare tried to sneak off to a bathroom and reunite a relic with her sword. Turns out it wanted in her abdomen, and had the blades to make it happen.

She tried to convince the rest of the party that nothing happened, but her explanation was a *little* thin.

I’m up early for a flight, have a comic I made about Flare’s backstory awhile back.

The team recently met Ophelia, her childhood caretaker. She’s a pretty strong dwarvish woman who cares deeply for Elodie… er, I mean, “Flare”. She sure didn’t put up with the elf’s drama, though.

Their height difference is extremely apparent. — Context: My D&D character, a high elf who goes by “Flare”, is actually a noble named Elodie Floriani. Her parents are god-appointed political advisors, and were well established in their careers when she was born. Not having the time to raise a child, they hired the best caretakers money could buy. Ophelia, a strong, no-nonsense dwarvish woman was her nanny who later moved into the role of house manager. She was quite fond of Flare/Elodie and did her best to raise her. “The fire” mentioned in the comic would have been from a wild magic surge coming from Flare/Elodie, who mechanically is a wild magic barbarian. Something must have upset her, triggering an accidental spell casting. — #ttrpg #ocsky #dnd

It is currently taking its toll on her body, because as it turns out it’s maybe a bad idea to consume metal if you’re an organic creature. I redid all the art in my zine to be monochrome and I gotta admit, it looks pretty sick 😭

It depicts an updated outfit, both with and without a jacket. While she looks stronger, the journey has had a negative effect on her body. Her copper skin tone has paled, her face looks gaunt, and she has dark circles under her eyes. Her eye color has changed to a dark red. Her stomach is bandaged, protecting an injury that never quite heals. On the left she is is wearing black pants, green boots, and a green/black sports bra like top. The green matches the patina copper develops as it’s exposed to the elements. Her arms have wires running through them under the surface of her skin. She has a series of lighter colored scars all over her arms from a magic-induced injury. The palms of her hands and fingers are scarred from daily Crimson Rites. On the right the outfit is the same, except she’s bandaged her arms and has a black cropped jacket on. Previously she lived the “sun’s out, guns out” lifestyle, but now she covers her unnatural metal “augmentations” from curious onlookers. (Someone in my group joked that Flare was playing Cyberpunk while they were playing D&D, so I tried to give her new clothing that vibe.)
