This is great. Also, let’s do away with private election companies. They continue to do a garbage job and excluding Māori candidates from the booklet this year was unforgivable.

Winners, losers, big losers and gigantic losers from the 2025 local elections
Winner: the endless cycle of underinvestment in core infrastructure. Big loser: the pipes.

I'm not sure if they will be.

I'm gonna ask the various councils after final results are released if they have this information.

Ok after an afternoon of results, texts, calls, messages on other apps and emails, I have some thoughts on today’s Local Election results

1) Voter turnout is depressing. 32%ish on average across AoNZ is pathetic.
2) The Māori Wards referendum should never have happened - it was a racebaiting farce…

I can't count - should say 25 not 28 voted against (will update on wikipedia version)

especially considering a lot of "independents" aren't and if you do like 5 seconds of research their party ties become apparent but this information isn't readily given to voters

kinda why i think local elections need to be more partisan, can't exactly rock up on election day and vote for the party you know roughly aligns with your views if they aren't running - a bunch of nobody-independents is disenfranchising (no offence to any ind candidates)

actually surprising to me that it seems the māori ward referendums haven't driven turnout, most places seem to be about where they were in 2022. or maybe it has driven turnout and without it we'd be doing even worse?

Well before the sun rises, the roller doors open to an unassuming warehouse in Christchurch. Voting papers for most local body elections in New Zealand will be processed here.

From about 5.20am, tens of thousands of votes from across the country are delivered, sorted and processed by Electionz’s…
