Starting this a month late, but 2026 media thread begins here!
Basically all of the Final Fantasy games with the Active Time Battle system had your first bosses "change stances" as a way to say "Hey, don't attack right now and wait for it to change back".

I'm pretty sure FF9 was the only one of those to NOT do this.
I'm older than you so I can confirm that they came with a little book that had the tutorial in it and you read it on the way home

also, i've seen so many people attempt to play oot/mm with "no spoilers or guides", and i have to emphasize that this was *not* the style at the time, and the games have glaring design flaws under these restrictions. you were expected to at least talk to your friends about it.

There was a post that floated around /v/ for a while that was like "how did you ever know to go into Peach's Castle?"

And the answers were all like "the game design was so good you were just drawn in" but all forgetting that there is a sign telling you the controls right in front of you to read!

It's funny that The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask is used as an example, since the game forces you to go through the full three days in Termina to explain the main premise of the gameplay.

Everybody wants to sound like this big Grand intelligent college thesis writing master of essays but no one actually wants to put the effort into what they they say they're good at and just want to actually sound intelligent without actually putting any of the work or effort into it.
In the past week I've seen Ocarina used as an example of a game without annoying NPCs and Majora used as an example of a game without a tutorial and I'm starting to wonder if the "old games were better" types have actually even played the old games they're talking about

The Ocarina of Time example is especially fucking baffling when every single NPC you would talk to Navi included would be telling you how to play the game but that all involved you actually pushing the button to talk to people or talk to Navi

"Forest Training Area"
This could also just be a bad example. OoT definitely has an incredibly long tutorial.

However, there are some older games with more "hidden tutorials" that should be covered and explored because it's not as common as it should be nowadays.

As for Puzzle Pop and Dream Team tho, devs have outright stated that these games CAN be ported once their exclusivity deals are up if Sega higher ups give the greenlight. So all that's needed is for us to keep the pressure on. And we've been good at that.
