The rise and fall of the first generation of Pokémon fans roughly parallels the rise and fall of the first generation of consumer-grade Internet. This is the story of how those two trends collided, and the resulting shape of the fledgling Pokémon fan culture -- after the break. #Pokemon #anipoke
Pikachu, chilling in Iowa, with Pokémon-style text saying "A World Lost to Time" looms menacingly over him.

Can I get an anthropologist to explain "yuri" to me so I can understand how Subaru cornered the lesbian market for automobiles?

"The 'otaku' is a category of individual that values obsession and collecting above all else." - Some Egghead

"Wow, how bizarre and exotic!" - Some Trekkie buying a TNG fanzine

Maybe it's the anti-Foucauldian in me, but I'm kinda tired of hearing people only talk about Japanese cultural exports as an implementation of "soft power." Some intellectuals in the 1990s really thought they were cooking with such insights as "Japanese people like cute things and shopping."

Van Daybreak never gets off a train like Rean Coldsteel or Lloyd Crossbell. Maybe Kevin Horizon does, but I haven't gotten there yet.

I don't know how to insert Reverie into this tweet without spoiling.

This sequence is very Trails of Cold Steel-coded.

We’re a week away from what seems to be the riskiest, most unique Pokémon game to date.

With Pokémon Legends Z-A’s honed focus on its setting and new combat system, Champions coming, and next year’s anniversary, it feels like the series' possibility space has never been wider.

Every once in a while, I see people wonder why, out of all of the available Pokémon to choose, Poliwhirl was so often shown front and center. Especially in the case of Pokémon's marketing in America.

Well, I'm going to do my best to answer that question now.

Around 2019 I cut social media out pretty much entirely. Everything everywhere all at once just killed my brain. Now that I make videos again I use it more, but I use it like a forum: checking in a few times a day for a few minutes while bored at work, and the connections I made are better for it.

@johtotimes.bsky.social nails it on the head again. The slower pace and more thoughtful posting style of forums leads to healthier/less centralized and therefore unmoderatable discourse. It's not just old-Internet aesthetics, it's a more civil platform.

Being ESL/multilingual probably helps more than it hurts. It gives you a better insight into how languages work and how to interpret them. It may suck that you don't know as many English words as a native, but we'll live.

I was researching a certain fandom event the past few days for a video. I've learned that it is easy to intellectually understand "people were bad," but having to document it makes it clear how even "minor" Internet crashouts take years off people's lives. Miserable work.

Someone really needs to teach the children how to be discrete about this shit. The move is that you take everything down, disappear for six months, then pop up with another name and learn how to not be stupid this time.

Hasn't an unspoken rule been with this sort of thing is to keep yourself anonymous?

Also, yeah, you're not going to win against Nintendo's lawyers
oatmealdome.bsky.social
[Lawsuit]

Nintendo is requesting that a court award it $4,500,000 in damages from a Switch piracy Reddit moderator for operating multiple piracy sites.

The person refused to stop after Nintendo asked them to, which led to this lawsuit.

They also did not respond to the lawsuit.

The only reason I make stuff is that it makes me happy, and I have Important Shit To Say about Important Shit (like Pokémon). Bots can't feel happiness or have anything to say, and the people who use them as a shortcut for expression can't express anything. That's their loss, not our problem.
truthordeal.bsky.social
If the goal is to be financially sustainable off your creative work, then I get the mindset. If not though, then fuck it. You're smarter and more creative than the bot, so who cares if it can spew out "content" at a higher rate. Your stuff will eventually find its audience and that's all you need.

People talk up Joe Yabuki and Toru Rikiishi all the time, but I never see any love for Rikiishi's epic bout against Sanae Dekomori.

i think one of the biggest problems in fandom is that a lot of people just...don't get into other things
in this era where you have a wide array of old and new stuff at your hands to see, indie or otherwise, getting away from something you hate is much easier! searching is part of the fun!

Hi, I spent 10+ years researching all sorts of PC RPGs: AAAs, indies, RPG Maker, non-English, etc. Together with 167 volunteers, I created/edited The CRPG Book: crpgbook.wordpress.com

You can download it for free, or buy a hardcover edition from Bitmap Books - ALL author's revenue goes to charity!❤️

Even though it's not private in the strict sense, I like the AnimeBytes method of "you get this much allowance to download, and have to seed to get more." It keeps true leechers off the platform, which is the main problem. A few wrestling trackers did something similar, but their time was harsher.

@littlekuriboh.bsky.social Hey, a friend of mine has been wondering what the song Dartz is singing at this timestamp for years now. He swears it's CCR, but we haven't been able to find the lyrics: youtu.be/q1dtzDUgYtg?...

The "Shudo confirmed Ivy was a lesbian" thing really sticks out as a piece of "news" that people just run with. I'm not sure why Ivy being gay would trigger Brock so much.
