Plenty of films became unwatchable when we moved from VHS to DVD, or DVD to Blu-Ray, or Physical to Streaming.
It was a lot less common, because the film industry, for all its faults, does a really good job of bringing older stuff to new hardware - something Nintendo only does kicking and screaming

The thing is. This is just literally, FACTUALLY incorrect.
I have Sonic 3 & Knuckles on my Switch, but if I want, I can go hook up my Genesis right now and it will still run.
The only old games I can't play are ones I don't have the hardware for, and guess what? That happens to movies as well.

There's so much trivial tutorialising dialogue in Pokemon games, they should add an "I have played a pkmn game before" option at the start so that if you've been playing for decades you don't get the tutorials and instead you get dialogue asking why you're playing pokemon instead of buying a house
