This is how many bad parts I've discovered and removed so far, and those are the ones I've detected that were internally shorted

I released a Public Service Announcement video on why you cannot use a Macintosh Portable without a good battery, on a Powerbook or after-market AC adapter: youtu.be/ed7-AqrY70s
PSA: Macintosh Portable Powerbook AC Adapter Damage

It looks like someone tried to use a powerbook charger with this thing. You absolutely cannot do that because this is the end result. The 5.2 volt regulator is unstable without a proper reference from the battery. This board is probably EOL
thetechknight.bsky.social
The board looks pretty good on first glance. Or is it? Take a closer look and see if you can spot the problems
thetechknight.bsky.social
Million dollar question is always why 😭
thetechknight.bsky.social
Thats the first time ive encountered that on a portable RAM card, and on the BOTTOM side... so someone did that and then shoved the card back in there.
thetechknight.bsky.social
Well that is certainly unexpected
thetechknight.bsky.social
Another day, another Macintosh portable sent in for repair. I see a lot of these
thetechknight.bsky.social
Buy a new cable from jcs-1 or Androda. @museumjoe.bsky.social

Start between the 4 chips in the rear to the ports, and back to the SCC. SChematic is available.
thetechknight.bsky.social
There's another one fixed. What a pain in the butt this one was. Almost everything that could be wrong with a portable, this one has/had. I still need to remove the board AGAIN and fix traces for the keyb connector.

Still had the factory install

This picture I took in 2022 will never get old. These two machines look cute together, and the CompuAdd still holds a charge
thetechknight.bsky.social
Yeah this thing is brand new...
thetechknight.bsky.social
Here is something you don't see everyday. New old stock pioneer car stereo
thetechknight.bsky.social
And yes almost every component in this thing are fake knockoffs from China... And yeah it's broken and the fault is not obvious
thetechknight.bsky.social
It's always amazing when you're working on electronics that use fake knockoff components from devices that are no longer manufactured

Childhood nostalgia... IYKYK

But yet the battery has a 2025 datestamp on it.

I am not familiar with vape, so that is good to know... It just seems so, wasteful.
