Self-centered, validation-seeking, prideful – few of us would want to be described this way. But, the 18th-century philosopher Bernard Mandeville argued, these are the traits that allow our society to function. As debates about narcissism abound, Mandeville is a thinker worth revisiting
The hidden role of pride and shame in the human hive | Aeon Essays
For Mandeville, humankind has a bottomless need to be liked: it is this perennial craving that forms the foundation of society

Counterpoint to the doom/division. Noticing multiple interactions with people casually & professionally that are hopeful, fun, & engaging. Lengthy over brief & functional.

Anecdotal but wonder if proliferation of tech/isolation is pushing people to seek out positive encounters & connections more.

"It is unlikely that Heidegger could have imagined this deathless Silicon Valley, where Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos have invested in anti-aging science, and where (relatedly and perhaps not as paradoxically as it might seem) individual human beings are increasingly considered replaceable."
A denial of death, post-truth, and "foul is fair" all speak to a refusal to acknowledge boundaries. For Trump and Putin, there is no boundary between real and unreal, good and evil, life and death. In the absence of any boundary, nothing means anything, and we face a nihilist abyss.

So much for "boosting growth".
All this vandalism will do is leave us with devastated ecosystems, fewer green spaces, worse quality of life, while neither solving the housing crisis (because the problem IS NOT AND NEVER WAS "bats and newts") nor creating "growth".

The Government has tabled 67 last-minute amendments to the Planning & Infrastructure Bill.‼️

Rushed through with little scrutiny, it’s a shambolic way to reform the planning system.

It creates confusion, sidelines science and leaves nature dangerously exposed.
