as far as I can tell, the only piece of evidence that "Democrats would be center-right in Europe" is that Democrats mostly don't want to nationalize big chunks of the economy and there are some countries in Europe where major parties on the left still at least pretend to want it

Also, don’t even get me started on Eastern Europe. The PiS is the largest party in the Polish parliament and has left-coded beliefs on welfare/economy then, uh, not that on literally anything else.

There's a lot of societies where this is normal, but they tend to be ones where parents have far more control over their children, like India. Probably not something we want to replicate here
