Everyone who caused the fall of Rome thought they were Rome

The decrepit aristocracy, the racist military, the immigrant generals, the "barbarian" federati armies, the arrogant Byzantines

And they were all correct in thinking that.

It's so funny how like half the liberals on here spent a week insisting this wasn't a war for oil
Trump on Venezuela: "That was a perfect attack. We've taken over a whole country. We've taken $4 billion of oil in one day. That will increase."

California Nationalism needs to become a real thing

Alberta has gotten a huge amount of mileage out of just kinda vaguely gesturing in the direction of leaving, which is super low cost

Everyone who talks about "training" and "deëscalation" is ignoring the significant elephant in the room that this was very probably just intentional murder start to finish
Worth finding out that DHS officers in particular have used their bodies to stand in the way of cars as a pretext for “fearing for their lives” and justifying lethal force. Enough that DHS had to rewrite their code of conduct.

This is from 2014.

Probably the first thing that made me realize that Ezra Klein is just Bad now was he kept bringing on these right wing thinktankers who would dress up what really just amounted to crimeslop. And he’d pretend they had something really insightful to say about how liberal cities need to introspect
Everyone predicted this????? "This is a covid level increase in crime that will reduce" was an extremely common take. These guys ignored it because they wanted to crime panic

Good test for a liberal statement on the ICE murder is whether it would look identical if it were a clear accident with no villain. Many refer to a "tragedy caused by Trump's political stunt".

The pancakes/waffle meme has unfortunately been appropriated by people who don't understand how basic communication works

Yes, in propositional logic, if I say "A, and therefore B" this doesn't imply that if A were not true, B would not be true. In English, it, however, does generally imply this

Every modern liberal decision seems to be based on one step consequentialist analysis and I think liberals have forgotten that quaint notions like "dignity" and "justice" are actually results of finding optima in the iterated prisoners dilemma

Possibly the worst statement from a democratic house member. The issue with someone shooting an innocent civilian in a car through a side window isn't that they weren't told in a training session to not do that
Sending armed ICE agents—typically lacking any training or experience in urban policing—into our neighborhoods leads to tragically violent outcomes like this.

Praying for this woman’s family, and for the Minneapolis community.
ICE officers in Minneapolis shot and killed a woman in a car, but details of the shooting remained unclear, with conflicting accounts from local and federal officials. The shooting took place about a mile from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020. Follow updates.

This is horrific. ICE just murdered a woman in Minnesota in broad daylight.

This rogue, violent agency has no business in our communities and must be abolished.

And the agents involved must be held fully accountable.

I am outraged by the horrific killing of a legal observer perpetrated by Donald Trump's ICE agents in South Minneapolis. Video footage shows clearly that this killing was unjustified. I demand a full investigation and this agent must be held accountable. www.npr.org/2026/01/07/n...
ICE agent fatally shoots woman in Minneapolis amid immigration crackdown
The Department of Homeland Security accused the victim of being a "rioter" and that the ICE officer who pulled the trigger was "fearing for his life." Mayor Jacob Frey rejected claims of self-defense.

(Liam is joking) this is a funny trope because genuinely I have never encountered this once in my life, ever. I'm sure it happens but it's way below "professor you cannot reach to save your life"
Always kind of amazed at the hubris grad students show when they talk to me, look me in the eye, fail to add the proper honourifics before and after my name, etc. Do they think we are equals? Does the PhD mean nothing to them? We have hierarchy in academia for a reason you know.

AOC: What we saw today was a criminal murder a woman while she was trying to flee for her life. What we saw today was a manifestation of every American’s worst nightmare: their government turning into a tyranny.

If a university in a blue state advised removing Plato because he was pro-slavery it would be the top story on Fox for a year. Democratic elected officials would be expected to answer for it within hours
From an email to one of our faculty members....

Not even Plato can escape censorship at Texas A&M!

It's so funny that they've at best managed to drag approval of this operation to even, after an extremely strong across the board propaganda effort
"Marco Rubio, we salute you!"

A real thing that was said by the CBS Evening News anchor tonight.

The way PR makes people effectively lie is so funny. It is obviously impossible to have both of these opinions "Such actions do not align with Austin Peay's commitment to mutual respect and human dignity" and " I deeply regret and apologize for the impact this has had... on our campus community"
January 7, 2026 at 12:55 PM
The weird thing about war politics in the US is it's pretty clear the media has a cordon sanitare around anything anti war. They'll boost obviously illegal actions like trump unilaterally attacking Venezuela and kidnapping the leader, and even after that the operation is only about at even
