Everyone predicted this????? "This is a covid level increase in crime that will reduce" was an extremely common take. These guys ignored it because they wanted to crime panic
I'm very curious to read good reporting on why this happened. It seems like every big US city had large drops in crime across a lot of categories. It can't be any city-specific policy because it's happening everywhere. AFAIK, nobody really predicted this! It's mysterious!

The local airport near my parents place has an unhinged name history
The airport has been named United Airport (1930–- 1934), Union Air Terminal (1934-1940), Lockheed Air Terminal (1940-1967), Hollywood-Burbank Airport (1967-1978), Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport (1978-2003), and Bob Hope Airport after comedian Bob Hope (since 2003 as the legal name).4 In 2017, it was rebranded as Hollywood Burbank Airport due to the lack of recognítion of Bob Hope Airport's geographic region.4]15)

This would be a much more compelling argument if people did, in fact, know themselves. Which they don't! Intuition is fake, nobody is immune from having some mental health issues occasionally
Like yeah, Pr(suicide gun owner) > Pr(suicide not gun owner). But why is that the only thing you're conditioning on? If you are not and have never been suicidal, having a gun in the house will not make you suicidal. Same with domestic violence. If you have a history with suicide attempts or ideation, don't get a gun. But you know yourself, know myself, and making blanket statements about conditional averages like they apply to everyone is silly.

I genuinely find this argument baffling. All these resource extraction industries have basically been automated, I do not see why the remaining rural folks should get credit for owning the land containing resources
it is just deeply unserious to suggest that rural areas are subsidizing "supercities." By tax revenue and spending alone you find the exact opposite What about by freshwater, food and fuel? You know things actually necessary for human life? How high would New York city's GDP be if they lost their access to water from upstate?

The actual underlying study says that if all you have is one word, the tone communicates more than the word. Which is uh not applicable to basically any real world communication
"The fact is Professor Mehrabian's research had nothing to do with giving speeches, because it was based on the information that could be conveyed in a single word. Subjects were asked to listen to a recording ofa woman's voice saying the word "maybe" in three different ways to convey liking, neutrality, and disliking. They were also shown photos of the woman's face conveying the same three emotions. They were then asked to guess the emotions heard in the recorded voice, seen in the photos, and both together. The result was that the subjects correctly identified the emotions 50 percent more often from the photos than from the voice. "In the second study, subjects were asked to listen to nine recorded words, three meant to convey liking (honey, dear, thanks), three to convey neutrality (maybe, really, oh), and three to convey disliking (don't, brute, terrible). Each word was pronounced three different ways. When asked to guess the emotions being conveyed, it turned out that the subjects were more influenced by the tone of voice than by the words themselves."
