The Boroughs of London by me and @mattfromlondon.bsky.social is now in the shops (out Oct 21st in North America)! 📚

Here’s a thread on what it’s about, what’s inside, and why - if you love all things London, local history, boundaries, facts, trivia and above all MAPS - you’re in for a treat.

🧵⬇️
Here we go then. As @diamondgeezer.bsky.social has decreed it, and for the amusement of ~3 people, I am bound for the great borough of Sutton.

Stand by for a reportage.

All right come on guys. At the moment (if I go through with this idea) I’m spending tomorrow travelling all the way from Stratford down to Sutton then back up to Enfield for the book thing by 6pm. My Oyster card’s gonna take a pasting.

Any votes for literally any other borough? 🙏🏻
💡 Publicity stunt idea:

I have a whole day to kill in London tomorrow. In homage to @diamondgeezer.bsky.social, my challenge is to visit all of the key locations we feature within a single borough in our book.

Which borough is up to you! Vote in the replies - the borough with most votes wins. Go!

So far it’s a choice between Sutton or Hillingdon. Both perfectly fine places to visit though rather inconveniently distant from the north London place I need to be at by 6pm...

Lots of good submissions for this so far, including one *really* good one which definitely ought to win a prize 🌟

(Incidentally, all of them so far have come from blokes - any ladies out there with ideas for new borough names? 🙋🏻‍♀️)

Around the time I moved to Spain (11 years ago now!) I was reading As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning by Laurie Lee, a book that captivated me so completely I ended up drawing a map of the author's journey. One day, I’ll get around to doing the same for its follow-up, A Moment of War.

Full marks for this costume from this Hieronymus Bosch fan 💯

We have the same unnamed critter lurking on our bookshelf, though I genuinely never noticed the little yellow crest on the red cloak until now!!

🎃 This Halloween, here are some creepy characters from my illustrated maps in the Atlas of Imagined Places and the Atlas of Imagined Cities. In these books you can discover where the Ghostbusters HQ, Chucky’s house, Dracula’s castle and more can all be found.

Any decent politician with an ounce of humility* would have resigned over this a long time ago. Not Carlos Mazon; his days as the regional president of Valencia are surely numbered.

Lovely review of The Boroughs of London by the London Society: "At less than a £1.00 a Borough this is surely the best value book on London around at the moment." Can't argue with that! 😉

Guarantee you he chose to demolish the East Wing *specifically* due to that photo of Obama jogging through it.

Part of me is *slightly* disappointed that nobody looked at the maps in this image from my thread about my new book* last week and sent me an indignant reply of outrage. "Redbridge merged with Waltham Forest, are you MAD" or "Sevenoaks part of Greater London? Over my dead body"
🔮 Lastly, we gaze into our crystal balls, have some fun inventing some new boroughs and imagine how they might evolve in the future.

Will they be reorganised and merged into a smaller number? Or will Greater London expand to include more of the surrounding area? Seems unlikely, but you never know.

Students who email professional artists asking for advice should have the decency to at least reply with a simple “thank you” when those artists take the time to respond.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Good news and bad news for my US customers 🇺🇸

Good news: Shipping to the US has resumed, so I’m now accepting orders again! 🙌

Bad news: You’ll need to pay a little bit extra at the checkout to cover the new import tariffs. Sorry about that - blame your president.
