But picking dumb fights is the IOC's (and many other International Federations) specialty.

This one has the potential to blow up in spectacularly gory fashion though.

This same Estonian team was 4th at the last World Championships. The same Canadian team finished 6th.

It seems weird, but maybe we shouldn't be surprised.

145 were won in various skating disciplines.

133 in speedskating
9 in short track
3 in figure skating

Only non-skating medals were skeleton and snowboarding. One each.

It would appear to be slow, but it's also lower elevation so it was always going to be slower than Calgary or Salt Lake City.

I do a similar exercise on Facebook, so I know that Wednesday's (Day -2) Hoser's Guide is minimalist in the extreme.

Actually can't believe that Canada-Czechia in the first draw of Mixed Doubles has been relegated to streaming and not the main CBC Network.

Neat bit of trivia for you - every Canadian flagbearer at the Olympic Winter Games in the 21st Century has won a medal at those game.

All of them except for Clara Hughes in 2010 (bronze), won a gold medal.

It is interesting. And the FIS made all the cross country events identical. The men are doing 10+10 km in the skiathlon (same as the women) and 10 km individual, while the women are going up to 50 km from 30 km.

Good catch. Forgot about the schedule.

I don't have any issues with your suggestions. I wouldn't be surprised if Weidemann or Blondin get consideration, or even Kim Boutin. And there's always the chance they go back to the women's hockey well...and if that's the case, I'd guess it's Natalie Spooner.

Interestingly, every Canadian flag bearer at the Olympic Winter Games in the 21st Century has won gold at those games, except for Clara Hughes in Vancouver. And she won gold at the previous games and won bronze in those games.

Our summer flag bearers haven't come to that level of success.

Great article and very thought provoking about the future of Olympic broadcasting.

One quibble, and it's probably someone else's mistake, but Skylar Park is a taekwondo athlete, not a judoka as indicated in the caption.

The short track team might actually dominate in Milan. Winning a medal in every event is well within the realm of possibilities.

I've always liked speedskating (maybe I should check for Dutch heritage), and this team will do pretty well. Not as well as they did at Torino 2006, or maybe even in Beijing, but they'll ring up at least 3 or 4 medals.
January 16, 2026 at 2:24 AM
I think the figure skating team event is a long shot. They should make the free skates as a top 5 team, but they've got nobody of note to compete in the singles events.

Dance is the best chance in my view.

The Loutitt injury was so unfortunate too. Injured at a test event at the Olympic venue. From what I read in the Italian press, it was largely caused by the jumping hill being constructed incorrectly.

That was a lot of quality Sickos football for Wild Card Saturday.

This is something else.

I went to the fights and a Timbits hockey game broke out.
i need every single person to spend the next 53 seconds of their life watching this video from the intermission of the Hershey Bears game

i promise you, it just keeps getting better

Fall 2024 I seriously considered planning on going to the tournament for at least a couple of days. Then geopolitics got in the way. I suspect I'm not the only Manitoban that changed their mind over the past 14 months.

Winnipegger here, and this is probably true. Winnipeg and the Twin Cities would get along just fine.

And truthfully, if you go about 15 minutes south of Winnipeg and probably 30 minutes north of the Twin Cities you'd find people that are also quite similar.

Just not the same as the cities.

The one that was at Henderson and Kimberley had a very similar appearance. It was significantly remodelled when it was changed to a FreshCo, but I'm not sure if the original roof is still there.

Apparently we're just supposed to think that football started 35-40 years ago.

It's a brave new curling world when Turkey and the Philippines are threatening to qualify for the Olympics.

And the US is in serious danger of missing out entirely.

It just shows the power of the 5 Rings in spurring sport development.

Apparently Manitoba politicians couldn't help but want to show the rest of Canada that they can be just as dumb and undignified as the politicians in any other Canadian legislature.

Good grief. Are these the best people we could find to represent all of us?
