Folks look at you like you're crazy when you say we're in the midst of the worst, most unprecedented Article I constitutional crisis in 🇺🇸 history & then Lisa Murkowski says that no one could have anticipated how threatening to conquer our NATO allies was a distraction w/ unforeseeable consequences 🤦‍♂️
“Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, said the issue of Greenland had “distracted in ways that I don’t think that any of us could have anticipated.”

How can you possibly fail to anticipate this? How is this a thing any adult, let alone a US Senator, can say?

the companies' mistake was passivity in the face of the possible election of the MAGA crowd and its fossil fuel allies. if you commit this kind of money you need to commit to the politics that supports it. it's the whole point of lobbying
"It’s the single biggest capital allocation mistake in the history of the automotive industry"

Ford will take a $19.5 billion loss on its EV plants.
GM will take a $7.6 billion loss.
Others such as Honda & Volvo have all warned investors of similar losses.

Automakers, suppliers and battery makers were funneling hundreds of billions of dollars into EV-related manufacturing in the U.S. Now it's all in question.

supercharging failure (today's WSJ). VW probably spent €millions to squeeze 67 extra horsepower from an ICE engine to shave 1 second off the 0-60 time - but electrics remain faster, mechanically simpler (& thus less prone to failure) w/ relatively immature battery technologies. #wrongdirection

Coming up on a year since I started this 🧵. I very much wanted to be proven wrong & shown to be exaggerating. Several hundred posts later, it's sadly clear that I was, if anything, underestimating just how quickly & markedly we would move down the road of democratic backsliding.
I gave a campus talk last night on Trump's first 100 days for the WUD Society & Politics group. A student asked me if I thought that, at some point, we might start to describe the US as a competitive authoritarian regime. I said that we were already there, it's just that most folks haven't noticed:

Scoop: The NIH infectious-diseases institute (NIAID) will soon scrub “pandemic preparedness” and “biodefense” from its web pages, according to e-mails I obtained.

The directive is the start of a broader shake-up at NIAID, which has long been attacked by Republicans.
Exclusive: Key US infectious-diseases centre to drop pandemic preparation
Staff members have been instructed to scrub this topic and ‘biodefense’ from the agency’s website.
