Exactly. I don't want Spider-Man to tell me to vote Democrat, but I think a story that tries to actively avoid "being political" and offending someone is going to be soulless and toothless. At that point, I'd rather have a book that I find offensive.

Wish I was feeling better today, and wish I didn't have the sort of anxiety that would likely get kicked into overdrive in a huge crowd an hour and a half train and bus ride from my home.

I would gladly be out there in the No Kings protest instead of wishing everyone luck from my living room. 😔

At least the characters in my books aren't so damn cucked by nonsensical beliefs, systems of authority, and their own insecurities about their masculinity that they can't so much as take a s*** without violating Jesus's Bro Code or whatever. Where's my million followers?

Okay, that was only supposed to be a short thing, but the more I type about it, the more it pisses me off that young people fell for losers like Andrew Tate, Sneako, and Adin Ross because they were "edgy" when they're as edgy as a beach ball. My MG to YA superhero novel is edgier than their crap!

I wrote a children's book that's edgier than anything ever said or published by a Christian conservative, and that includes the ones like Milo and Crowder who were going all out with insult humor and advocating for things like killing ideological opponents or mocking George Floyd's murder.

Honestly, though, it won't even be an interesting watch. Christian conservatives need to realize they're uncool. They were never edgy. They relish in enforcing hierarchies and never rebelling, and they promote submission to authority. That's all fine, but they think they're edgy. They CAN'T be edgy.

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.
