□ Why do we have rectangular classrooms with a “teaching wall” at the front?
□ Why do we line up student’s chairs in rows so often?
□ Why do we divide learners by age?
□ Why do we have notions of tardiness and truancy?
□ Why do we have a set daily schedule?

We see it expressed in teacher turnover and burnout, as K12 workers had the highest burnout rate of ANY surveyed profession in 2022!

If teaching conditions are learning conditions, then resolving systemic factors that create burnout would improve the learning environment & experience for everyone.

Schools have become toxic for many individuals, both students and adults. This has become an emergency situation. Schools need to support students' self-directed learning, not try to cram them with irrelevant information and then test them on it.
School can be psychologically dangerous. This is serious.
The author, an emergency pediatric psychiatrist, recommends:

Reduce homework
Add a mental health curriculum
Take bullying seriously
Restore funding for playtime, music and art in school and de-emphasize academic overload
End “perfect attendance” awards and goals
Start school later

YES!! "Curiosity, enthusiasm, creativity, and joy have replaced boredom and resignation in these schools. Students have both voice and choice. Teachers relish the flexibility they’re given to craft a more engaging curriculum for the needs and interests of individual children."

#BookSky I recently listened to Pachinko by Min Jin Lee and read by Sandra Oh. I highly recommend this incredible story of oppression, adversity and resilience! I also learned a great deal about Korean history.
