Porn to me is visual sex/video. Erotica-plot is sex/no plot + no HEA. (as opposed to erotic romance-sex drives the plot but always HEA)
I know I'm in the minority-not a fan of "smut" used these days to describe anything not closed door. I think of it as erotica, but harder sex. #Smutcember

I don't always do the "third act break-up" in my romcoms, but this series in particular is about these 4 guys who are not very good at long-term relationships, and it makes sense for them to muck it up a bit before it gets resolved. I'm not vehemently opposed to it as a plot device.

Then winced because he could tell dammit, her head still hurt despite all her arguing. "It's five pounds. I can do that with my pinky." She stuck a finger out and wiggled it to prove her point. But it wasn't her pinky. "Harper." "Nash." She grabbed the three pound weight. "Okay." He leaned in and took that weight from her, too. "You asked for it."

For my Club Licentia characters communication is vital, so they do it very well.
In Coach's Challenge it goes great, until one instance that they clear up within days.
"We've been stellar at communication until now," he said. "I don't know what happened. But I'm sorry."

Sometimes they show up when the character does. But often, especially w/a series, I think of one I'd like to use for the next character that pops up w/a story in that series. Then that character lets me know if the kink fits or I need to wait for someone else.

This is a difficult one. There are so many general things to follow, but most also have caveats.
Keep your characters true to themselves is a big one. But. Sometimes the story is based on them exploring themselves. But. Deep down they will still be them & that must show.
