Crafting a believable world doesn’t mean overwhelming a reader with info. Smart world-building helps your story breathe, giving readers just enough detail to understand the stakes, setting, and culture while keeping the focus on your characters and plot. #scriptsky #scriptsky+

This week over at Writing and Whatnot, I wrote about general meetings and how not to screw them up. One of the worst meetings Shawna and I ever had ended up getting us a job. So every general matters...

👇🏻Important 👇🏻
As I read pilot scripts for competitions, the biggest problem I come across is a lack of series engine. There's no glimpse into what the average episode will look like or the overarching story, conflicts, or character dynamics that will extend beyond the pilot episode... #scriptsky

👇🏻 Do this. 👇🏻
Ditching the orphans can be particularly helpful when writing short scripts, where shorter is usually better.

But it's also a good exercise to do during the polish phase, to tighten and tidy up the prose and presentation. #scriptsky

70 pages into a plot edit on the Romantasy script because I made two HUGE changes right at the beginning. It’s so much better now, though.

Then I can go back and do a line edit.

Then a character pass.

Then a remove the widow pass.

So much done, so much more to go. 💪🏻

The clues are there in the Stranger Things finale.

You know how it’s going to end.

So I wasn’t surprised and not nearly as angry as I expected to be.

They did a good job.

Now - let’s do some more shows set in the best decade ever!

The 80s. 💪🏻😂

I have a whole finished feature script to edit. What am I doing, instead? Outlining a new one. 😩😂

Because my brain will NOT shut up and I can’t concentrate on anything else. 😂😩

Day 6 /12 off from the day job.

Party at the Rose Bowl this evening will get me out of the house. 🎉

If Stranger Things ends like The Umbrella Academy, I’m gonna be pissed I wasted my time.

RESIST the urge, writers! 😂😩

Brain wouldn’t let me write until I finished the new drop of Stranger Things. 😩😂

I was mostly entertained.

It’s still raining here in So.Cal. It’s been four days….

I miss the sun.☀️ 😩

😩

I rescued my trash bins (today is trash pickup day) from floating away, tho!

Breakfast done. Cats fed. Last gifts wrapped. Food ready for party tomorrow.🎉

Cable keeps going out as the Pineapple Express deluges Los Angeles with sideways rain.😔

The elitist cat is HOWLING because there is no sun so she refuses to sit (where she bakes herself every day) in her window bed. 😩

No, not all camera directions in a spec script are bad.

If they're enhancing the story, great, but usually, it's a case of a noob writer believing that they need to include these things when, realistically, the director is responsible for adding these elements during pre-production. #scriptsky

Oregon… you can kindly take your weather back.

The wind is gusting like mad and the rain is coming down sideways.

Kthanks.

👇🏻 Don’t be predictable…👇🏻
A script is well-structured, it flows well, the story math checks out, and yet... readers aren’t responding to it. There’s a good chance they’re getting ahead of the story, ‘cuz it’s too predictable. Here’s a quick #Scriptsky #Screenwriting thread on ANTICIPATION and SUBVERTING EXPECTATIONS.

Rian Johnson talking about the first step/foundational piece of building out ANY story is answering these questions:

"Who is the Protagonist? What do they want? Why can't they get it? Why do we care?"
