The main things I'm thinking are it trying to remain kid friendly and alternatively Chinese market friendly because they have massive issue with skeletons/skulls.

First game is 100% worth your time. It's very cinematic and looks gorgeous. It's in my personal Top 5 and the combat is pretty satisfying. The soundtrack and story are pretty great too and every character brings something to the table.
