I’m not talking about a single screening, Kantara’s been playing at Lightbox for a week and a half now. But TIFF is high profile, so perhaps that scares them off. Also, it’s only one venue, distributor can’t make enough money on that so there’s pressure to make a deal.

There are some exceptions. Some of these films have been showing at TIFF's Lightbox without incident, and there've been some one-off shows at Market Square. Also not sure if it's only certain films that set off the attacks or all Tamil/Telugu-language releases.

4) York/etc will sometimes claim they were also targeted, but I've yet to see any evidence of that.
5) Film may then show up at York/etc, sometimes it just never comes back.
6) Future Tamil/Telugu/Malayalam-language blockbusters tend to show up only at York/etc until 1) happens again.

3) Vandalism incident happens at non-Indian theatre that was to be showing the film e.g. Cineplex, Filmdotca. This has ranged from pepper spray attacks to screen damage to shots fired outside the theatre to last month's fire attack. At this point, the theatre showing the film usually pulls it.

Pattern usually goes like this.
1) Distributor books blockbuster Tamil/Telugu/Malayalam-language Indian film into cinemas other than one of the Indian-run York/Woodside/Albion/Central Parkway cinemas.
2) York/etc pull the film if they also had it booked.

There's usually a small report about the vandalism incidents in various places, like the ones I linked to in the thread, but don't think anyone has attempted a larger piece. There might have been something in the Globe & Mail a few years back, but I can't find a link to it right now.

And finally, a few weeks after the films were pulled from most GTA theatres due to the vandalism incidents mentioned further up in the thread, KANTARA and THEY CALL HIM OG will begin showing at Albion, Central Parkway, Woodside and York today. Funny how that works.
