#TrekBookClub will be discussing “SCE #6: Cold Fusion” & “SCE #14: Caveat Emptor” this weekend. Originally, I was planning to only discuss on Saturday. However, while preparing the questions (& looking at my schedule), I think there is enough material (and time) to continue into Sunday.

31. I couldn’t find any references to self-sealing stembolts (or Chateau Picard 😊). However, there were a few callbacks to earlier Trek episodes. What were some of your favorite Trek references in #STSCEColdFusion and #STSCECaveatEmptor?

30. If there is a topic in either of these books you would like to discuss which hasn’t been mentioned yet, please post it here. Some potential topics include a favorite section, a memorable guest character or a favorite sequence.

I’m a big fan. The novella is almost a more natural length for stories that feel like tv episodes than the full-length novels. I’m about twenty novellas in so far. Eventually I might work through the whole series. #TrekBookClub

This was my first time reading them and they were fun! I would read more. There is enough of a story there for a full novel, but they solve the conflict pretty quickly. #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion

29. What were your general thoughts about the SCE novellas? In what ways where they similar to full-length novels? In what ways were they different? Would you be interested in reading more of them?

I always thought it was interesting we never saw the "rogue computer" in the modern Trek shows. I think because in the newer era we as a society didn't fear the computer, whereas in the '60's there was concern about computers taking over. #TrekBookClub #STSCECaveatEmptor

I think it was a good ending. Now another story may blossom from it if the AI was found by a passing ship. You could have fun with all the possibilities.

The Mosada analogy was, to be honest, a bit odd and forced, but the solution was creative given the situation. It was a non-violent way to stop the problem, which is always good. #TrekBookClub

All peace and love to Kirk: Talking things to death was Kirk's forte. Of course more interesting than shooting things to death (and cheaper, too, for special effects departments). #TrekBookClub

The risk is you may not know who built the machine, what its purpose was or how it will interact with your own systems. Another big risk is, if it's used, and antiquated, there is potential of it breaking down. #TrekBookClub #STSCECaveatEmptor
Yes, anything food related in an airport is pretty high everywhere.😀
LOL - There was a period of time a few years ago when I went to a bunch of soccer games. That $40 parking fee almost costs as much as the actual ticket. The $8 soda, $10 cheese fries and $12 hotdogs were pretty high too!

Another really delightful line in this book. Validated parking does seem right in line with Ferengi modus operandi. Every time I pay $40 for stadium parking or $12 for a ballpark hotdog, I think of the Ferengi. I’m a “captive customer” 😜 #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion
28. The SCE away team & the da Vinci crew resolved the threat of Milia. What did you think of their solution?

27. Kirk reasoned with Landru & convinced itself to shut down. This happened several times on TOS (e.g. M-5, Nomad) & in more recent episodes (e.g. Freeman w/ Vexilon in Lower Decks’ “In the Cradle of Vexilon”). What makes this type of story a popular one on Trek?
#TrekBookClub #STSCECaveatEmptor
26. It turns out Daimon Phug bought the Landru computer which we last saw in TOS’ “Return of the Archons”. What were some risks of buying used & antiquated technology, like what Phug did which started this whole problem?

25. How does the existence of a device which traps its visiting customers reflect/provide comment on Ferengi society?

I mean, it's not the best basis for society, but it's probably a lot better than many (most?). And all things told, it has its pluses and minuses. For example, yes Ferengi will lie, but they are predictable and don't generally try to murder everyone. #TrekBookClub

It seemed casual in my opinion. You have to instill trust in your crew. There has to be some command decorum so that a leader can lead without compromising their command.

He's straight laced like Picard but a bit more casual and personable. He's a good mentor when advice is needed. He trusts his people, especially the engineers since he knows they have a lot more experience than he does. #TrekBookClub #STSCECaveatEmptor

It’s a cute story device, but idk if it actually makes sense from a xenoanthropological view. They could have just as easily become amazing artist, story tellers, or bread bakers stuck inside all day #TrekBookClub #STSCEColdFusion
24. We meet Milia, the Ferengi equivalent of Landru, who advocated for peace & harmony in the past. Why do you think his movement was not successful & did not have a lasting effect on present-day Ferengi? If it was successful, how would current Ferengi society be?

I like the idea of a sketch cover, but when you look closely you can tell where it’s been clipped and pasted together. This wouldn’t fly on a physical book. It’s also hard to tell thats supposed to be a Ferengi. Though I do like his pose with the staff since that happens in the story #TrekBookClub
Yes, there is. Btw, my favorite DS9 Ferengi-centric episodes are "The Magnificent Ferengi" and "Little Green Men" - great comedy episodes.
23. What did you think of the theory that it was Ferenginar’s rainy weather which eventually led its society to focus on the accumulation of wealth. Does this make sense? If so, what were some things the heavy & constant rains come to represent to the Ferengi?
