I'm now in the unenviable position of being a straight guy who has to explain that I watch "Heated Rivalry" for the hockey.

Forgot to give my updates on the desert film festival, so here goes: the next 2 films were ones I had already seen before: the Brazillian political thriller "The Secret Agent," which I saw last month - holds up quite well on repeat viewing; and "The Sting," which, it goes without saying, is great.

On the second day of the festival saw the French dramedy "Summer Beats" (originally, "Ma Frère"): a charming feelgood story of adorable kids and slightly older kids from different walks of life at a summer camp. Amusingly, one of the leads from last night's movie plays a much more chill role here.

Gonna be spending the next few days at a film festival in the desert! The first film I saw was "Météors," a French coming of age drama about delinquent young men in a dead end town. A well-made exploration of the struggles of addiction and the importance of hope even in hopeless situations.

Having now seen the first three episodes of "Pluribus," the best way I can describe it is "what if the Unity episode of Rick and Morty was a whole series."

Finally caught up with "One Battle After Another" yesterday, and I have to say: bold choice for Sean Penn to base his performance on Vince McMahon.

For the next week and a half, I'm going to be seeing a bunch of movies at the Haifa International Film Festival!
First up, starting in about 15 minutes, Julia Ducournau's new body horror, "Alpha"! Bets are open on how long before I start feeling physically ill (complememtary).

So, fun thing I just found out: John Oliver's latest piece on Netanyahu is geoblocked in Israel. Had to use a VPN to watch it.

Went to a movie today, and they played the trailer for the new TRON. The second they revealed Jared Leto's face, the woman sitting next to me was like "oh no..."

Fantastic Four is pretty good, by the way.

There are many reasons to hate this move, but "Melania posed for nude photos" isn't one of them. This isn't even about slut-shaming or whatnot. Associating opera with sex is not degrading to the artform or whatever, because operas can be very sexual. Here are some examples (NSFW, of course):
I don’t know about any of you, but when I think about the arts, I always associate opera with nude pictures.

The thing that gets me with this stuff is that I don't think, in this case, he's motivated by racism. I think it really is just that he hates having to learn a new name for something. The racism (and potential to distract from the Epstein case) is just a bonus.
