Today was the first meeting of my AI and music class, and in the first hour we drew a direct line from AI slop Xmas music to the wildfires raging in LA right now. If you teach AI and don’t discuss its immediate climate impacts, you need to start doing it. Every single day. Here are some sources (🧵):
I was recently talking to another professor who said that their students started referring to Pierre Schaeffer’s “Étude aux chemins de fer” as “The Choo-Choo Piece” and it is basically my Roman Empire (also probably why I’m randomly giggling to myself at any given moment)

Reporting on MIT’s shameful ban via the Boston Globe:
May 30, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Annnnd MIT’s administration just banned the class president from commencement for standing up for freedom and against state- and institution-sanctioned murder yesterday (especially hypocritical after Sally Kornbluth affirmed students’ right to free expression immediately after her speech).

I’ve watched every MIT commencement speech since my graduation’s in ‘11, and I can say that none have used the word ‘butthole’ twice nor stood up to power (or imparted as much wisdom) as @hankgreen.bsky.social’s. Thanks for speaking truth to power on a stage I care so much about! ❤️🩶🖤 #gotech

Sen. Warren was my 1L contracts professor, and this is why we never came to class without doing the assigned reading.
WARREN: Can POTUS legally tell the IRS to change someone's nonprofit status?

BILLY LONG: I'm not able to answer

WARREN: You can't read these words and tell me what those words say?!

LONG: I can read the statute and I did

WARREN: Then tell me what they mean!

Sure, ChatGPT may be undermining the educational system, but Kristi Noem is living proof that it didn’t need much help
HASSAN: What is habeas corpus?

NOEM: Habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country

HASSAN: That's incorrect

There is no euphoria like the feeling of a conference submission deadline being extended just as you’re getting ready to pull an all-nighter to meet the first deadline

It is WILD to now be a matriarch in the academic electronic music community (I’m 35). By the end of tonight’s late SEAMUS concert (~11:40pm), I was the eldest femme person in the bar, one of 2-3 others amidst ~40 people. I would usually stay until I was the last, but I’ve been awake for over 20hrs 🫠

When I turned 35 in Jan, I reticently got one of those fancy retinol night creams because I figured I would be frowning & furrowing my brow a lot over next 4yrs and I might as well try to do *something* to counteract it. I assumed it was all a sham, but after 2mos, I’m astonished to say IT WORKS

We’re talking IP protection in the age of AI this week in my AI+music class, and I cannot begin to describe how gleeful I am to be able to bring up OSU’s attempt to trademark “THE” now that I teach here

I know I went off about the main title theme for White Lotus S3 last week, but all is forgiven - which is exactly what I had hoped would happen last week (shhhhh no spoilers)

Today in my AI and music class, we started digging into the nuts and bolts of neural networks, and I introduced hidden layers using the scene from Severance where Helly finds scary numbers for the first time (I also told them that the work of hidden layers is Mysterious and Important, just like MDR)

WHAT IN THE NAME OF ALL THINGS GOOD AND HOLY HAVE THEY DONE TO THE MAIN TITLE THEME OF WHITE LOTUS

Valendyne’s Day at a uni where you are valued looks like your dean (like, of the entire college of arts and humanities, not just the school of music) personally emailing you with a link to a grant that she saw that made her think of you, and doing so more than a month before the deadline 🥹

Happy Valendyne’s Day to all who celebrate

I almost always “Skip Intro” for the shows that I watch, but the Severance intro (for both seasons) is SO GOOD that I watch it every time. While clearly & intentionally CGI, there’s a photorealistic glossiness that’s uncannily reminiscent of AI-generated images (even in S1, before DallE et al)

I have a lot of reservations about the use of large language models (esp given the climate ethics), but I will say, I have some students in my AI & music class who have fantastic project ideas but no coding experience, and they have been able to accomplish some pretty incredible things so far

Is there a word for when random people show up at a government building and announce that they're in charge
New — I'm told USAID employees who tried entering another agency bldg (not HQ) earlier this morning were being turned away by security guards with unknown man blocking turnstiles. Man said msg late last night should have said all buildings closed. But he suddenly left and access reopened—for now.

The DEI caused the plane crash narrative is a distraction. The tariffs are a distraction. Whatever insane nonsense Trump spews that the media will chase like cats chasing a laser light is a distraction. The only story that counts right now is the wholesale hijacking of control of the US government.

So I haven’t done the math and probably won’t ever have time to, but did this year’s GRAMMYs have the most female/nb awardees of all time? It honestly felt that way, but I don’t know if that’s just the fact that statistically, slightly increased representation feels like a landslide, or if it’s true
