@uaw.org Local 174 flying squadron armband. Circa 1939s-40s, from the archives at the @reutherlibrary.bsky.social. Vital to the UAW’s early successes, flying squadrons were groups of union members ready to mobilize and support in solidarity fellow workers on strike at other workplaces.

In 1973, the Nixon administration's "Enemies List" was revealed to include @afscme.bsky.social president Jerry Wurf. He told the @washingtonpost.com he was pleased the White House "had taken note of our efforts." This visor has Wurf's name stamped on the band. #LaborHistory #LaborUnions

Playing a key role in the March on Washington was United Auto Workers president Walter Reuther. Organized labor often has a bad reputation on civil rights during this era, mostly for a good reason. Reuther is an important exception.

90 years ago this week, this gavel was used to commence the inaugural constitutional convention of the @uaw.org, the moment a network of autoworker local unions merged to create the international union. From the papers of Francis Dillon, the UAW's first president, at the @reutherlibrary.bsky.social.
