The leaves might be turning, the temperatures dropping and the nights fair drawing in, but here in Glasgow you can still get a ice cream from the van in the park, and it shouldn't be any other way!

Hume Castle, a wonderfully eccentric folly built near Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders in the 1780s that evokes sand, camels and Beau Geste. What you see today was built on the site of a formidable castle with origins in the 1200s. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

Hume Castle. The image shows a view across a green field to a grassy mound that rises beyond a stone wall and some trees. On its top is an extravagantly crenellated stone castle that appears square and has rounded corners. The sky is blue.

‘Friend or Foe?’ is a fast-paced new thriller set largely in south-west Scotland during World War Two. Galloway House near Garlieston in Galloway served as a hospital during the war and features in the book.
Available as a paperback, Kindle, Kobo or Apple:

This modern image shows the west front of Galloway House near Garlieston. There is a lawn at the foot of the frame that meets a curving drive in front of the house, which we are seeing from near one corner, with the right-hand end nearer us than the left. The house extends out of both sides of the frame and is made of grey stone with red stone facings. It comprises a central section with wings that project forwards of it. Part of a tree is visible in the top left of the frame. The scene is in muted sunlight. The front cover of ‘Friend or Foe?’ is shown in the bottom right corner.

🪬🧿 Castle Stalker, Scotland

#scotland #castle #highlands #stalker #landscape #travel #photography #alttext
High-angle shot of Castle Stalker in Scotland, revealing its location on a small tidal island. The castle's stone tower rises from the island, encircled by water reflecting the cloudy sky above. The surrounding landscape includes extensive mudflats exposed by the tide, with meandering streams cutting through them, leading to the open waters of the loch. Distant mountains form a majestic backdrop under a sky filled with dynamic cloud formations, suggesting a remote and rugged natural setting.

A woman outside a turf-roofed house, Isle of #Coll, late-19th/early-20th century. The postcard is titled “The Last Cottar, Coll”. A cottar is someone who occupied a small dwelling, usually in return for work. Unlike crofters, they had no security of tenure

Strathcarron Station last weekend. Not exactly Grand Central, but it has a certain charm (and a fair amount of weeds).

The ruins of Ardrossan Castle in Ayrshire, rising above the town when seen from Saltcoats. A castle was first built on the site in about 1140, but the remains you see today mainly date back to after 1450. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

Day 4 of #31DaysOfGraves - Languages

This stone has a Gaelic inscription on one side and English on other. It's located in the ancient burial ground behind former Free Church at Ballyhennan, near Arrochar.

Gaelic was in retreat here by mid 19thC so such inscriptions are a comparatively rare sight.

🪬🧿 Like a gate to a different world (Lauriston Castle, Edinburgh)

#edinburgh #scotland #estuary #landscape #nature #pathway #ironwork #alttext
A striking, centered photograph of a partially open, highly ornate black wrought-iron gate framing a scenic view, set within a shadowed border of dense autumn foliage. The path leading up to the gate is a wide, light-brown gravel track. Beyond the gate, the bright landscape opens up to a sunlit, golden-hued field that slopes down to a wide, calm estuary or bay of water. A distant, wooded shoreline forms the far bank under a muted, overcast sky. The image has a dramatic contrast, emphasizing the dark, intricate metalwork of the gate against the bright vista. The location is an estuary view near Lauriston Castle in Edinburgh. The scene captures a feeling of stepping from shadow into light and a hidden, majestic view.
