'Kirkwall Fair.' (1888) Although Arthur Melville was not regarded as one of the Glasgow Boys, he was seen by them to be a kindred spirit. A year after painting this work on Orkney, he left Edinburgh and settled in London, although he often returned to Scotland to paint.

The Nether Largie Standing Stones, one of the many prehistoric attractions in Argyll's amazing Kilmartin Glen. The five large standing stones are up to 2.85m in height and the central stone is adorned with 23 carved cup marks. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

August 11, 1968. Three year old me on the shoulders of my grandfather witnessing the final run of a mainline steam-hauled passenger service in UK. The “Fifteen Guinea Special," ran from Liverpool to Carlisle, and marked the end of an era.

Designed for a competition run by a German design magazine (Zeitschrift für Innendekoration) in 1901, it wasn't constructed until the 1990s, almost 70 years after Mackintosh's death in 1928.

The crumbling and precarious clifftop ruins of Newark Castle, near St Monans in the East Neuk of Fife, also sometimes known as the Castle of St Monans. A castle was probably first built here in the mid-1200s. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

Homage to Shipbuilding in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow. Installed in 2005, it was designed by Jimmy Cosgrove and constructed by Hector McGarva. It shows a shipyard worker on one side and his dog on the other.

Hiding in plain sight - a tiny stretch of the Antonine Wall ditch at Bantaskin in Falkirk. The stone base of the Roman wall was excavated here in 1976, but then destroyed to make way for a new road. #RomanSiteSaturday

Originally known as Grecian Chambers, the CCA building was designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson between 1867 and 1868. Constructed as a three-story commercial property with ground-floor shops and upper-level offices.
