It doesn't work in the context of a setting like Star Wars where they've lived in a sci-fi/fantasy world there whole lives and it all seems normal to them

I think it's worth noting that this style of dialogue was popularized by Buffy The Vampire Slayer, where the characters grew up thinking vampires, demons, magic etc were fictional and relatively recently learned they were real, so them feeling like they're in genre fiction in-universe makes sense
