2025 was fucking grim.
2026 may well be too.

And it's all too easy to get caught up in the doomscrolling/posting, even here on Bluesky.

So, I'm planning to somewhat counter this by noticing and posting at least one postive moment from my day, every day this year.

Australians' freedom of speech is under attack because Palestinians are seen as less than human
A coalition of forces is working to stop Australian speech and protest that criticises Israel. Cultural landmarks like Meanjin and the 2026 Adelaide Writers Week festival are victims.

The weekend might be a good time to catch up with this. The Right (formerly free speech absolutists) is crushing our speech, cultural treasures & protest rights bc they despise us. They despise Muslims even more than us “woke” irritants. Networked & funded hate. open.substack.com/pub/lucyham2...

Thinking about this cynically, I suspect they maybe always planned to split it and basically pass the gun bits with the Greens and expose the Coalition for calling for all these changes to be rushed in and then imploding when there was a proposal. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

The Greens are ready to work with the government to pass gun laws next week.

The rest of the omnibus bill however needs too much reworking to meet community concerns.

We need to keep all people in the community safe from discrimination and hatred, but good laws don’t come from rushed work.

A few years ago I found the perfect tiny canvas backpack. Good quality and beautifully designed.

I raved about it so much that a colleague also bought one.

Before Christmas I lost mine.

The company no longer exists.

My colleague no longer uses his, so he gifted it to me. 😁

Labor calls it the Combating Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026, but that title alone tells you what’s going on, one form of racism gets special priority, right there at the top.
